from what we know, CITR was probably made around '99, just when the whole columbine masacre happened. I think that it might have been one of the inspirations for writing this song.

if they ever make a video for this song, I think that the images from the incident would match it perfectly.

Didn't know that. I'd never guess CITR had anything to the with the Columbine shooting.

There are also some good images from this documentary about the Columbine shooting I watched once, pretty shocking.

I think that the whole CITR(the book) is about troubled youth, and those 2 out of columbine were seriously troubled.
also in the song Axl mentiones innocence, and those guys certanly lost it in the most tragical way.

I think Catcher In The Rye was mentioned in interviews prior to 1999 - so I doubt it's about Columbine.

here's what HTGTH database says about it.

Catcher In The Rye - mentioned in Rolling Stone (Jan 2000)

The Columbine shooting happened in April 1999.

The interview with Rolling Stone that was published in January 2000 was conducted in November 1999.

Brian May recorded guitar for the song sometime in late 1999:

Quote
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Guns N' Roses confirmed to MTV News that Queen guitarist Brain May did indeed spend some time recording with Axl Rose late last year. "Brian spent a week with the singer," the spokesperson said. "They recorded several songs worth of material, but we have no idea what's going to end up on the end product."

So you're saying that within a period of seven months Axl produced the entire song?

I don't think so.

The lyrics and song title are directly connected with JD Salinger's book and Mark David Chapman's killing of John Lennon.

I think that the song isn't that complex and that Axl could have easly made it in 7 months.(at least what we've heared so far)
