I remember seeing some pictures a few years back of Axl with various members of the Chili Peppers. Does anyone know if Axl just hung out with them or what?

From around 1990:

I don't think they hung out, probably just spoke when they met back stage . . . . Axl has a puppy dog face there  hihi

I thought Axl was also photographed backstage at an RHCP concert from 1996 (during the hermit era).

No.

Maybe you're thinking of Suicidal Tendencies?  Wink

Yes, Axl is (as, well he should be) very fond of RHCP. ?I know flea, and Anthony Kiedis like Axl as well! ?Paul Tobias, was in RHCP for a time, due to Axl's recomendation. ?It did not work out, as he did not have the chops for such an act! ?Axl was spotted in 1996 at a RHCP concert, as well as at a Radiohead show!

And does Flea not look like Wayne Rooney from the Manchester United?   Anyhow I remember seeing pictures of Axl wearing a RHCP shirt a long long long time ago.

And Axl's ex-wife dated Anthony, so maybe they shared more than just space...  Tongue

I think you've misheard that one.
Buckethead & Finck played something very similar to "I Could Have Lied" by RHCP while they were jamming right before My Michelle at RIR3.

Paul Tobias has never been in RHCP. a guy named Jesse Tobias was however, for a very short period.
Buckethead auditioned for them between Frusciante and Navarro too.

I also think the RHCP gig Axl was spotted backstage at was in 1997. Chad Smith didn't recognize him at first, lol. he apparently had short hair and a beard.

oh hell yes it would!
but I think RHCP has planned a lot of their European first leg already, and they're working with Kanye West for the American leg. guess maybe when they come around to Europe again though, maybe late this year, early next year.
