I have a question for others on this board who are adults. Are the kids/teenagers today worse than they were back in your time?
No. But society as a whole is.

What do you mean by society?
It is all relative.
In this case: Amerian society as a whole. We live in this strange bubble, and there is no doubt about it.

You're contradicting yourself here SLC. If society as a whole is worse than it used to be, the kids as a whole are worse as well, no?

No.
I am saying the kids are not
the only ones
worse, but rather that society is.
Society raises all the kids (directly and indirectly), like it or not, and they (youth) are a spoke on the wheel per se.

OK, I'll agree that society is worse, not only the kids. But when did this actually happen? Those that are not kids anymore were once, and didn't start getting worse at thirty. Many were probably worse kids than thier predecessors. So kids are worse today, bottom line. They grow up with the values and morals they had and pass those on to the next generation.

You need go no further then a short drive in the car to see how people think. You can get cut off by somebody who is on a cell phone and if you honk the horn, they give you the finger. No "it's my fault-sorry wave"; those days are long past. You get the finger and "fuck you". The lesson there is: No accountability. It isn't anybodies fault anymore. Then you also have a lack of common courteousy that goes along with it.
People are like that everywhere, with everything. It is a "me first" mentality and it trickles down to the kids, then they act the same way. If a child gets a bad grade, the parent now goes to the school and blames the school. The school then reassigns them a new teacher and gives them a better grade. What lesson does this teach the child?
We had a business deal go sour a few weeks back. The person wrote us a bad check for a few thousand dollars (which I might add is a felony.) When we contacted the buyer the cussed me out! ME! The guy who had the rubber check written to him. They wrote a bad check, broke the law, fucked up a deal and then turned around and told me how lucky I was to have them and that "they had money". I hung up the phone and shook my head because I know that they believed what they said. The woman had two kids with her too, so what lesson did that teach?
Somewhere in the last 20-30 years the accountability has eroded away. I take pride in owning up to my mistakes or screw-up. I think that shows true character. It also ends problems quickly just to say "I am wrong, how can we fix this." But most people do not think like that anymore. They teach their kids that lesson, and think the world OWES THEM everything and that respect is something that is earned. All of this is totally backwards; respect is something that should be given first, not something somebody "earns" from you.

I would say internet. But internet can be a positive influence as well as a negative one.
Erm, I dunno. I think hip hop and MTV, but since I hate both of them, my negative influences are too much internet and games.

Hip Hop isn't to blame.
Msn isn't to blame.
It's easy to shove the blame over to music or technology because some parents are too lazy to tell their kids they can only use the computer for half of the day. Or that they can only download music without swearing untill they are say, thirteen. Hip hop is controlled by the media right? So can we blame them for our problems? Thats pretty easy. But heaping the blame over to other orginisations is not going to help anything. Parents should be trying to mould the child into a good person and not the surroundings the child is in.
Parents need to tell kids the dangers of drugs and drinking underage, and say they cannot. Talk to them about sex, and say the legal age, help them develop morals, values. As much as I hate christianity, maybe taking them to church on sunday for a few years is a good idea, to help them understand morals (even if it is an extreme).
I think its unfair to blame other things, when really people should be looking at parents and how they are raising thier kids. My parents are very strict. I cannot go out to MAJOR parties and drink until I am blind drunk, mum and dad would be so upset with me if I was having sex at my age (sixteen - the legal age here). But I am so thankful that they taught me the things they did because me and my siblings will be better people.
Sure, there have been times I hated them, but Im so glad for everything they did.

the problem starts at home....the lack of two good parents, the lack of role models at home, lack of strict parenting, kids spending 10 hours at day care, etc.
that's the core of the problem. AND when there's problems at the core, then the external factors (rap, video games, etc.) can have a negative effect as well. but personally, i don't think these external factors are as big an issue as the problem at home.
when i was listening to songs like "shout at the devil" and "dr. love" when i was in 4th grade, my parents allowed it. and i'm so thankful for it. but it was because they knew it wouldn't effect me negatively because they were doing a great job as parents.
there's always been controversial music and fads that make parent's uncomfortable.

Do you think like 10 years from now, everybody will forget how wild teens are now?
Do you think older folks say this about teens for every generations?
I don't think kids/teens are any different now than they were 10 years ago. Maybe these bad-asses are just given more attention now by the media than before. I think it's always been like this.
