To all bit torrent users...

I recently recieved a new mac and OSX. I downloaded and used Azurez to download some new Gn'R boots and a few other selections. Something very very strange has happened to my computer. Desktop and folders are unavailable. My finder is not working...My roomate seems to think this is due to some hacker getting into my computer from the open port. Has anyone else ever had this problem?
If this is the case, Please beware of what you download. Now I'm going to have to re-install everthing.

I don't think it's torrent related. Install a firewall.

Now, I'm not sure what kinds are available for Macs, but any firewall that prevents access to ur Mac from the Internet should do it. For PCs, ZoneAlarm is good. For Macs?

Unless your roomate is knowledgeable about Macs, I'd say he/she's wrong. I've used Azureus on my Mac without any firewall for about two years, and haven't experienced any uncommon behaviour. There could be many reasons as to why your problems appeared, but reinstalling is always a good remedy.
If you want to use a firewall, it comes built in in your operating system, no need for installing anything extra. Just go to System Preferences -> Sharing -> Firewall and click Start.

Ah, thanks for the info. Can someone actually get through the 6881 port? and access my computer/information. Maybe I can enlighten him on the subject.

I just got a new G5 iMac with OS 10.4...I run BitTorrent 3.2.2a and have had no problems. When I do run Azureus, it seems to run slower and have more (although not major, just performance) problems than BitTorrent.

No one can 'get through' a port. You only have to worry if Azureus (which listens on the port) has a security hole itself, which is unlikely. Another way would be if someone tricked u into installing a trojan server. Most attacks via ports attack the software listening on that port like web servers (80), FTP (21) etc... No need to worry. Like jaknudsen said, a reinstall should fix it.
