A Cult surprised that sprang out of nowhere, this is absolutely badass:

http://thecult.us/WEAPONOFCHOICE/

In an ingenious move often reserved for film, The Cult has announced they will be releasing a 'prequel' to accompany their latest critically acclaimed album, Choice of Weapon. The digital-only release Weapon of Choice reveals the songs at a stage of development that will be of interest to The Cult?s fans and followers. Weapon of Choice is a document of a work in progress and offers a unique opportunity to hear The Cult?s process. The material has not been previously released, and will be available exclusively on iTunes for two months only beginning October 16, 2012.

"These songs were turned over and over, forged in long rehearsals and writing sessions, and emanated from challenges both personal and professional,? said lead vocalist Ian Astbury.

The dynamic ten tracks that comprise Weapon of Choice were recorded when The Cult returned to the studio in 2011 with producer Chris Goss. The songs were conceived in New York, Los Angeles, the California desert and the band?s Witch Mountain studio.

"We put our guts into this; Goss was able to create an environment where the songs were born through playing and turning over lyrics, through hard work and intense sessions,? continues Astbury. ?These songs have an integrity and rawness of their own. In many ways it's a different album to the one we released and reveals the foundations of Choice of Weapon. We were able to close the doors and begin to explore spaces we had not been in for a while.?

Now The Cult has revisited the Chris Goss material to unveil the creative process and foundation behind Choice of Weapon. Followers of The Cult can keep up with interactive countdowns leading up to the release and take down of Weapon of Choice on the band?s website and social media properties.

There is also a DL link "Twisted & Bleeding" (aka "Wilderness Now")

Exclusive Album Stream: The Cult "Weapon of Choice"

Tue, 16 Oct 2012 09:30:37

Iconic rockers The Cult are nothing if not enterprising and unconventional with their music and how they release it. The band is issuing a "prequel" to accompany their latest album, Choice of Weapon. The prequel is cleverly called Weapon of Choice and reveals songs that were a "work in progress" while the band were working dutifully on Choice of Weapon. ARTISTdirect.com has proudly partnered with the band to exclusively stream the companion prequel in full.

The Cult are a prolific group, and furthermore, they are committed to releasing their artistically uncompromising music in the most creative ways possible, hence the prequel.

The prequel album comes out today (October 16) [on iTunes] as a digital release and will be available for two months only. It's only available until December 21, so if you like what you hear here, then pick it up on the quick since it's available for a limited time only.

So take a listen and enjoy Weapon of Choice and if you dig it, which we are fairly certain you will, then you know what to do next and that's nab a copy.

Debuting now on the Independent Film Channel:

Exclusive premiere: The Cult ?Elemental Light? (SALEM Remix)

http://www.ifc.com/fix/2012/11/premiere-the-cult

The Cult?s Ian Astbury is a deeply visual guy, so when he had a vision of ?an eagle being ripped out of sky? by some man made machination, it had to become integral to his next marriage of sound and vision. Director Kostas Seremetis turned the idea into more of a gallery wall piece than a music video, echoing some similar sentiments from an earlier 2007 collaboration between the two called ?The Resistance.?

?The sentiment of this film captures the loss of wilderness, and a generation trying to make sense of the trash heap they have inherited,? Astbury said, not pulling his punches. ?It evokes nature versus man, that struggle [and] desire to control nature and ultimately death.?

The Cult reached out to SALEM and asked if they?d like to do a remix from ?Weapon of Choice.? Remarkably, Astbury said he just used the the email address on an EP he had. It was a shot in the dark for a band notorious for not giving a damn, but then I suppose when some legends come calling, you answer.
