Exclusive Stream: The Cult Go Wild on 'For the Animals'

The Cult frontman Ian Astbury says his band intended to tap into a primal power on "For the Animals," a track from their forthcoming album Choice of Weapon. "While the Cult have always been open to a wide range of influences, some people feel the need to pigeonhole us," says Astbury. "We've always been an outsider group; we don't seem to fit completely with an existing genre. 'For the Animals' reflects the sentiment that we are a raw, visceral animal, independent and beholden to no one. We celebrate that aspect that is also rising in the culture. We go where nature takes us." The album will be in stores on May 22nd, but you can stream this
track today.

Classic Billy riff and Ian still sounds great. Could do without the piano, but nonetheless I can't wait for this album!!!!

I'm not into the piano tinkling myself, the live version does away with that nonsense.

The piano is a little distracting, agreed.

Still a great song, though! I cannot wait for this album!

I like the piano myself, I think it fits the song.  So we won't see a piano on tour. Smiley

More new songs from SXSW:

From the Auditorium Shores Stage gig 3/17 - about a minute and a half of "Lucifer", sounds heavy live - MM rockin congas.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AyrQGsz32s

And from the 3/16 gig at Waterloo Records, "Honey From a Knife", lotsa Duffy. Audio only.

The Cult SXSW Concert Filmed for Terrence Malick Movie + New Song Streaming

Both live concert and backstage footage from The Cult?s recent SXSW show, which saw them playing in at the 25,000-capacity Auditorium Shores, was filmed for usage in Terrence Malick?s upcoming feature film ?Lawless.?

Rooney Mara, an Academy Award nominee and breakout star of ?The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,? is starring in the movie and was on hand at the venue. She appeared onstage and in improvised scenes backstage with members of the band. Talk about living the rock star life.

Actor Matthew McConaughey was also on site, playing congas on two songs during The Cult?s set. Check out the photo of singer Ian Astbury hobknobbing with Mara and McConaughey.

Astbury wasn?t just hanging with A-listers while rocking SXSW crowds last week. He actually delivered an incisive, hour-long,clinic-style presentation that dissected the voice as an instrument. The discussion was moderated by Martin Atkins, who has served time in Killing Joke and Ministry.

Those who attended were not only educated about vocals tips and techniques; Astbury also dispensed advice for staying healthy on the road, sharing that hydration is key! Astbury also recalled tales of his encounters with the likes of Guns N? Roses. We?re sorry we missed it, because if anyone knows about voice-as-instrument, it?s Mr. Astbury.

And if you need more Cult in your life, stream their new single ?For the Animals? over at RollingStone.com and check out the teaser visual (graffiti and all) for the song below. The single lands Monday, March 26, while the Cult?s new album ?Choice of Weapon? is due May 22.

The Singles Bar: The Cult are Wildly Thrashing Back on ?For The Animals?

The Cult have just come roaring back in grand fashion. As leadoff to their first album in five years, ?For The Animals? (click the link to listen to the stream on rollingstone.com) finds the band doing what they do best ? riding Billy Duffy?s absolutely searing riffs and showcasing Ian Astbury?s ever-powerful vocal command.

Blerd commented the other day on the ever-growing trend of 90′s rock acts coming back to the forefront. But it?s almost as if some of the truly great rock bands of the past 20 years are making moves to come out of that Han Solo-like carbonite freeze they?ve been in. John Tempesta?s drums and the rollicking keys provide the backdrop; Astbury and Duffy lay broad strokes to the canvas and offer us hope that Choice of Weapon - the band?s ninth full-length ? is their best output since 2001′s Beyond Good and Evil.

I'm assuming that it will be a digital only single as opposed to a physical release?

I know there's a limited edition vinyl picture disc (Lucifer on B side) that will be available, not sure about other formats.
