The Cult's Ian Astbury Enthuses Over Boris Collaboration

Aug 17th 2010

No stranger to working with other artists -- just check his work with the reformed psychedelic god Doors, dance project UNKLE and former Guns N'Roses guitarist Slash for evidence -- the Cult's frontman Ian Astbury has spoken in glowing terms of his work with Japanese headbangers Boris as they prepare to release 'BXI', a three-track EP.

Introduced to each other by Sunn O))) -- the high priests of drone metal -- way back in 2005, Astbury and Boris finally got together when the band sent the singer a number of ideas.

"Late last year I got 10 pieces of music and to really blew me away," Astbury told BBC 6 Music. "Working on a whole album would've taken a long time so we focused on three songs."

Comparing the experience of working with Boris to that of his recent collaboration with Slash, Astbury said, "This was way more involved. Slash arranged an afternoon in LA and his persona is incredibly different from Boris.

"Slash is far more out front and more of a character in that sense and I think his music is larger than life whereas Boris are far more introverted and far more experimental and far more complex."

Thanks funk, interesting interview.

The IA/Boris thing has really taken on a life of its own, definitely a far different animal than the Slash collaboration.  Nice to see Ian happy on both sides of the spectrum.

BXI review from the New York times:

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/16/arts/music/16choice.html?_r=1&pagewanted=all

BORIS & IAN ASTBURY

?BXI?

(Southern Lord)

Ian Astbury was the singer for the English rock band the Cult, a million-selling band in the mid-1980s, and more recently took on Jim Morrison?s role for the reunion of the Doors. Mr. Astbury has a voice of oily allure and weary charisma; it?s a baritone croon graduating to a shriek, with thick vibrato at the end of a line. He?s a one-man factory of late Romantic affect who never seemed properly of his own era.

Boris, the Japanese underground rock band, feels atemporal too, channeling various sources of power-trio acid rock without suggesting what it might be under the borrowings. The group represents one giant flourish, impossibly cool. Together, Mr. Astbury and Boris are strange and powerful, smoky and drippy, like ripe peaches and truffle honey. They sound momentous, as if there were a million-dollar budget supporting them.

?BXI,? their four-song collaboration on the small and resourceful metal label Southern Lord, is flashy and impenetrable, a loud fantasy of deep space. It?s got a huge drum sound, heroic riffing and crude, art-brut guitar solos just when your ears expect virtuosity. On the three tracks that feature Mr. Astbury ? on the fourth, Boris?s female guitarist, Wata, sings the old Cult song ?Rain? in a little-girl voice ? he doesn?t deliver his most polished vocal performance; he sounds a little grizzled as he punctuates his lines with ?yeah!? and ?no!,? depending on the context of the first-person narrator, conquering hero or fatalistic philosopher.

But the record?s charm lies in those little discrepancies and uncertainties. He?s an old pro, thrown into a strange situation and working hard. Here and there he sounds hesitant, like an actor who hasn?t quite worked out his motivation as he sings lines like ?standing there like a victim will only get you killed? or ?the forest knows how you feel.? THE CULT's New 'Capsule' To Arrive This Month - Sep. 5, 2010

According to a posting on THE CULT's official Twitter profile, the band's previously announced four-song "capsule" ? which is described as a collection of not just new music, but film, art and fashion ? will arrive on September 14.

The "capsule" will span across multiple media formats, including vinyl, digital, USB, CD and DVD formats.

In an August 20, 2010 interview with the U.K.'s leading classic rock radio station Planet Rock, THE CULT guitarist Billy Duffy spoke about the "capsule" concept and how it differs from the way the band released new music in the past.

"Well, I think you'd have to have been living under a rock for a long time to not notice that the music business has somewhat changed," Duffy explained.

"It's a different way of getting music out there.

"People ? not everybody, but a lot of people ? are, really, now more comfortable downloading music and the fact that aren't any, really, many record shops or places to buy music in that format anymore is indicative that people's habits are changing with the Internet, and we just felt, as a band, that the idea...

"We did a new album in 2007 in a sort of traditional way ? get a record deal with a company and make an album and take out a very bad loan from them and then go and promote it, and blah blah blah. This time we just thought we'd do it a little differently, and we did it on... New Wilderness is our own label. And Ian [Astbury, vocals] felt very strongly that he'd prefer to try and record two or three, four songs and get them out there while they're quite fresh than spending a lot of time trying to write a whole album. It was really Ian's general feeling, which I sort of agreed with; I think people's attention spans are shortening, and I think the idea was... He just wanted to capture the music quickly and get it out there. That was the theory; the practice is not always quite so as easy as putting that into practice. But the idea of the capsule, if you wanna be old-fashioned, you could call it an EP. So rather than doing albums...

"Other bands who operate on a grander scale two, three, four years recording a record, or they sail in from their Carribean hideaways, go on a tour that lasts 18 months, and everybody is really happy with that format. That doesn't really work for THE CULT anymore. So we're just trying to be a little more fluid.

"The people who are buying tangible, what you'd call hard products, like vinyl, they're collectors and they want stuff that has a little bit more depth and content, and that's why it'll be a multimedia package."

THE CULT's first new studio recording since 2007, "Every Man and Woman is a Star" was released as a two-week exclusive through the iTunes store.

Rock fans worldwide will immediately recognize Billy Duffy's blistering guitars and Ian Astbury's powerful vocals soaring over a relentless beat.

"The latest recordings from THE CULT, guided by legendary producer Chris Goss (MASTERS OF REALITY, KYUSS, QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE), are a mixture of violent guitars, emotive vocal performances with high melody and driving beats," Astbury said in a statement. "Textured metaphysical rock music for the contemporary music head."

Thanks I'm looking forward to this.  Just curious why they are giving top billing to Aderra Media Technologies in the press release.

Not a whole lot different than a tradional record label extending a presser on any featured new release I suppose..

The Cult have had a good working relationship with Aderra for a while now. partnering with them for the USB "Dogtags" from the LOVE/LIVE tour..

I just noticed that the press release was issued by Aderra Inc.  Like you said, they're going very cloak and dagger with this release -- I don't see any mention of these "capsule" details on their website, Twitter/Facebook, MySpace etc.

And I'm not sure any info will emerge from any of those sources until the last minute.

As much as The Cult have embraced technology and alternative ways of the release of new material, they'd much prefer they stay a bit unaccessilble in some areas.  They like the fans to "find" news rather than make it readily available...
