Various ways to get the Led out

From Ian Astbury's wailing vocals to Billy Duffy's crunchy guitar work, The Cult definitely owes a stylistic debt to Zeppelin.
The British group has been crafting testosterone-fueled hard rock since the mid-1980s when it racked up a bunch of hits on modern and mainstream rock radio ("Love Removal Machine," "She Sells Sanctuary," "Fire Woman," "Sweet Soul Sister").
"Born Into This" (Roadrunner), The Cult's first studio album in six years, was helmed by Youth (Killing Joke).
Besides a leaner sound than usual, a Stoney vibe is prevalent on the title track and "Dirty Little Rockstar."
Duffy and Astbury are in top form on the abrasive "I Assassin," sweeping ballad "Holy Mountain" and "Tiger in the Sun," which revisits early Cult territory.
Velvet Revolver fans should check the CD out. The Cult performs Sunday at House of Blues Anaheim.

"Born Into This" getting some year end "Best Of"
kudos.

"#18. The Cult ? ?Born Into This? Veteran rockers Ian Asbury and Billy Duffy are back with their finest album since ?Sonic Temple? nearly two decades ago. Their previous album, ?Beyond Good and Evil,? suffered from over-production and lackadaisical songwriting. Not so on ?Born Into This? ? a rampaging, raw, down and dirty rock album that takes no prisoners. Crank it up to 11. Key tracks: ?Dirty Little Rockstar,? ?Illuminated,? ?Born Into This.?

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT: MUSIC REVIEW
This comeback Cult cuts it
By Bob Gendron
Special to the Tribune
November 27, 2007
For the Cult, the third time is indeed the charm. Playing the second show of a two-night stand Sunday at a crowded House of Blues, the thrice-reunited English band made a convincing case for its return to respectability.
It couldn't have come at a better time. Thanks to a passing remark, the Cult has been in the news more of late than it has since its late '80s heyday.
During a recent concert in Cincinnati, vocalist Ian Astbury hinted that his group would be opening next year's heavily rumored, albeit unconfirmed Led Zeppelin reunion tour. Such an honor would represent a coup for a band that has spent the better part of the last two decades in constant flux. Hampered by infighting, spotty albums, multiple hiatuses and Astbury's questionable participation in the Doors-related act Riders on the Storm, the Cult became irrelevant soon after alt-rock's outbreak.
Currently expanded to a quintet that includes Astbury, original guitarist Billy Duffy and a cast of hired hands, the band sounded big and loud enough for an arena. A back-to-basics approach and a set that almost exclusively focused on early and new songs suggested that this comeback is meant to last.
Adorned in cowboy boots, thick scarves and animal fur, Astbury came dressed to play the shaman obsessed with nature and spirits. Lyrical references to wolves ("Wild Flower"), fire ("The Phoenix") and idols ("Sun King") figured prominently, as did magical women both living ("She Sells Sanctuary") and deceased ("Edie (Ciao Baby)").
Despite any appearances of transcendental intentions, the singer acknowledged that the band's intersection of gothic mysticism and hard-rock crunch is fundamental. "People get confused by us. It's very simple. It's rock 'n' roll," he announced near the performance's outset, giving way to full-tilt boogie beats and bluesy tones.
At its core, the Cult offered ample opportunities to shake hips. Aside from a few wah-wah pedal effects, Duffy kept the solos pure and short. Taut riffs and economical melodies afforded the tunes plenty of breathing space, accentuating the pouty strut in "Lil' Devil" and jumpy drama of "I Assassin."
By embracing its roots, the Cult has rediscovered the underdog passion that always served it -- and dedicated followers -- well.

Cool performance! Does Ian not let loose he could have milked some of those notes. Kind of sounded like he was holding back a little. I wish I could see them!

Kinda depends on what mood he's in on any given night. He'll do the bandana look one show, leathered up and hair flying the next.

Tons of insight behind Ian and Billy's relationship and power struggles over the years, a very good read.

gracias, I liked the article a lot but...is it me or did the writer have something negative to say about each of their albums??
I dont think Electric is 'brutish'....imo it's one of their best albums.
I also never knew that they were ridiculed for being Spinal Tap-like. I always thought they escaped that because of their mystic lyrics and such. Yes, they have their share of traditional rockers like Sun King, but they also have mystic ones like SpiritWalker to balance it out.

Finally got around to buying Born Into This, and I found the 2-disc Savage Edition. On first listen it's pretty cool, nothing that outstanding, but some tasty guitar riffing here and there!
I think I preferred Beyond Good & Evil, but I'll give this new one a few more listens.
