http://www.azcentral.com/thingstodo/music/articles/2009/08/18/20090818thecult.html

GET TO KNOW: THE CULT

Sound: The Cult's sound walks the fine line between psychedelic goth rock and guitar-driven alt-metal.

Claim to fame: Originally named the Southern Death Cult, they first gained attention in the U.K. as the Cult with the 1985 goth single "She Sells Sanctuary." They didn't hit it big stateside until 1989's "Sonic Temple" album, however, which focused more on hard rock and spawned the hit singles "Fire Woman" and "Edie (Ciao Baby)."

Latest effort: "Born Into This" (2007). Due to decreasing album sales throughout the music industry, the Cult will no longer release proper albums. This does not preclude them from recording new material, however.

If one song could make you love this artist, it would be: "Wild Flower." The lead-off track from the Cult's 1987 album, "Electric," captures the Cult at the cusp of their transformation from goth to metal. Lyrically, it harks to their earlier work, while guitarist Billy Duffy's crunchy power chords point toward their later mainstream success. Studio guru Rick Rubin's sparkling production is a plus.

For fans of: Jane's Addiction, Sisters of Mercy, the Mission UK, late '80s alternative rock.

Trivia: Singer Ian Astbury's growl was often compared to late Doors singer Jim Morrison, so much that when surviving Doors John Densmore and Ray Manzarek reformed in the early 2000s, they tapped Astbury to sing.

Details: 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21. Celebrity Theatre, 440 N. 32nd St., Phoenix. $38-$63. 602-267-1600, celebritytheatre.com.

Thanks to socaldude and cultcentral for the following setlist and wrap up of last night San Diego gig:

Nirvana
Big Neon Glitter
Love
Brother Wolf, Sister Moon
Rain
Phoenix
Hallow Man
Revolution
Sanctuary
Black Angel
<short break>
Electric Ocean
Wild Flower
Illuminated
Rise
Dirty Little Rockstar
Fire Woman
Love Removal Machine

It was a great show. Ian's voice sounded terrific and Billy was on fire. I was in the balcony so I had a great view of the show and the fights down on the main floor.

Logistics:
Living Things started at 8:30 and played until about 9:15. They were decent. They have a very energetic, charismatic lead singer who carried the band. Some of their songs were pretty good. I liked the song Oxygen a lot.

The Cult hit the stage about 10pm. They played the entire Love album straight through and then took about a 5 minute break. The lights stayed down and the project stayed on so it seemed pretty short. They returned to the stage and blasted through a pretty short greatest hits set. Interestingly there was no encore. Ian announced it was time to go and they played LRM and that was it. Lights came up around 11:30pm.

The Cult's Astbury Plays With the Crowd in Phoenix

Posted 1 day ago

A decidedly upbeat Ian Astbury, frontman of the Cult, poked fun at pop culture as well as Phoenix's Celebrity Theatre, the venue in which his band was performing, on Aug. 21. "The 'Thunder From Down Under,'" Astbury said about the all-male revue that is slated to perform at the Celebrity later this year. "I'm very excited about that."

Astbury was a tad sarcastic, as usual, during the 90-minute show that featured 'Love' in its entirety, as well as an encore of hits. He and his crack team -- longtime guitarist Billy Duffy, drummer John Tempesta, guitarist Mike Dimkich and bassist Chris Wyse -- antagonized the audience. The sold-out crowd was on its collective feet from the opening track, 'Nirvana.'

"The party is better when you're standing up or dancing," said Astbury, who sang two songs, the aforementioned 'Nirvana' and 'Big Neon Glitter,' before addressing the audience. "I'm 47. There's no excuse."

He also ripped the audience during the encore for its lack of enthusiasm about The Cult's song 'Illuminated,' from 2007's 'Born Into This.' "Don't get too excited," he said, after announcing it was the next song. "Are you ready or are you just f---ing around?"

The Phoenix date was the second show on the 'Love' tour, which runs through Sept. 9. Astbury was modest about his band's efforts. "We've never done this before," Astbury said. "I hope you enjoy it."

Late in the set, Astbury said he was surprised that the songs he and Duffy wrote when they were 23 were still relevant. Astbury still had his sociopolitical moments, though. He referenced the Taliban and thanked all his "brothers and sisters" for coming to the show. A champion of Native American causes, Astbury named several tribes before the poignant rendition of 'Brother Wolf; Sister Moon.'

Mostly, the evening -- which featured the second live performance of 'Black Angel' ever -- was about fun. Astbury played tambourine against during 'Rain,' and tossed several of the instruments into the crowd. After 'Rain,' Duffy, who copped a Pete Townshend-like windmill stance several times throughout the show, posed with his fingers fashioned into a number one. 'Hollow Man' was rollicking, with a flurry of images on the video screen.

It was clear the audience, which seemed to be familiar with the 'Love' track listing, wanted to hear the hits. The noise level in the 2,000-seat theater in the round intensified, as it was clear the band was going to perform 'She Sells Sanctuary' next. Even Astbury could feel it. "This is a song that needs no introduction," Astbury said.

For the encore, Astbury returned wearing a headband and an animal tail sticking out of his back pocket. He paid tribute to David Bowie with a few vocal riffs of 'The Jean Genie' during 'Wildflower.' Prior to 'Firewoman,' he backtracked about his comments regarding 'She Sells Sanctuary.' "This is your big rock moment," he said facetiously. "Please come on. Engelbert Humperdinck is next week."

We are working on a true head feeding project with our friend Ian Astbury. Pretty excited about it- Ian introduced us to the master of military camouflage, Steve. You probably have seen Steve?s pieces in epic films such as Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers as well as the upcoming HBO follow up titled, ?The Pacific?. Steve?s WW2 and Nam camo are some of the best in the world. Hands down.

The Cult in top form with Love Live Tour at Club Nokia in Los Angeles

August 23

This summer several artists are touring and playing an album in its entirety to celebrate the anniversary of it's release.

RATT, Judas Priest, Motley Crue, and Aerosmith are just a few who have been satisfying die hard fans with this concept. The Cult is doing this as well as they bought their "Love Live" Tour to the Club Nokia last night in Los Angeles. The band is performing their 1985 " LOVE" album in its entirety. They kicked off their 90 minute set with the album and the song " Nirvana" which is the lead song from the"LOVE" album which got the crowd moving. They proceeded to sing all ten songs on in order just like the album. Songs such as "Rain", "Revolution" and "She Sells Sanctuary" kept the crowd excited and signing along. The Cult had a video montage in the background on stage in which they showed during the set that blended in perfectly with the songs and made hearing this album in its entirety even more special. Several of the songs are rarely performed live. The song " Black Angel" was performed last as it is the last track on the "LOVE" album then the band took a very short break while a video played.

Ian Astbury still is the ultimate charismatic front man and his voice is still in top form. He interacted with the crowd very well talking about the events in the area and the club.

Billy Duffy who is the main songwriter along with Astbury for the band was amazing on guitar and rates as one of the most underrated guitarists in the music industry.

Rounding out the band and playing just as impressive and showing their strength as musicians were Mike Dimkich, Chris Wyse and John Tempesta.

After the short break it was about the music as the band returned with such crowd favorites as "Rise", "Fire Woman" and the closing song "Love Removal Machine".

This was the ultimate show to see in a club size venue and the Cult proved why their music has stood the test of time. This tour should not be missed when it comes to your town.

The Cult's tour of duty
Shows coincide with 25th anniversary of group changing its name

By LISA WILTON, SUN MEDIA

Last Updated: 29th August 2009, 3:43am

Ian Astbury isn't one for nostalgia.

Even though 2009 marks his 25th year as the lead singer and main songwriter for British psychedelic rock band The Cult, Astbury has no interest in drawing attention to the fact.

"It's so cheesy isn't it?" Astbury asks rhetorically.

"We didn't want to do 'The 25th Anniversary Tour.' It's just nostalgic. The Cult has always been a live band and we've always prided ourselves in trying to make current and contemporary work."

However, you could say the band's latest tour is a step back in time.

Playing two sets each night, the first half of the show has The Cult performing its classic 1985 breakthrough album, Love, in its entirety.

While the timing of the tour just happens to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the veteran band changing its name from Southern Death Cult to simply The Cult, Astbury says he's considered doing this type of show for a long time.

"I remember seeing David Bowie play the Low album about eight years ago and then I saw The Velvet Underground reform and play their first album," he says.

"I watched them and made mental notes. I thought it was a really intriguing idea to play an entire body of work. It was something that Billy (Duffy, The Cult's guitarist and co-founder) and I had talked about for a number of years off and on. It was just the right time to do it."

Astbury says the response to the tour, which stops in at Flames Central tonight, has been surprisingly positive.

"We've been looking at each other on stage going, 'Wow!' " says Astbury.

Although Love spawned two memorable singles -- She Sells Sanctuary and Rain -- which made the group a huge draw on the then-alternative music circuit, The Cult didn't find mainstream success in North America until 1987, when Love Removal Machine became a staple on rock radio. But Astbury says The Cult chose to perform Love instead of more successful albums such as Electric and Sonic Temple because he found the music he's been listening to lately just happens to be the same stuff that influenced The Cult while they were recording their debut.

"The idea of playing this record live is that our recent influences are like all the influences we had before. Things like The Doors, Led Zeppelin plus post-modern influences like Joy Division and PiL," he explains.

Astbury has also kept busy with other projects. Earlier this year, he produced a play in New York. He is also working on a documentary called Conquest about aboriginal genocide from a woman's perspective with his producing, and real-life partner Calgarian Apolla Echino.

Great photo. Smiley

The Cult's followers flock to First Avenue

Sep. 2 2009

The musty smell of long-loved leather, flowing tap beer and that vague "middle-aged ex-rocker" scent swirled through the crevices of a packed house last night at First Avenue. Suburban housewives found a babysitter for the night and sported ear-to-ear smiles with their date-night outfits. Memories of high school days gone by likely swelled with every fuzzy guitar riff as opening band Living Things cranked out a traditional but surprisingly solid hard rock set, whetting the palettes of this unusual and seemingly 30-and-up crowd. These are fans of the Cult. They once rocked it proper--some of them at the band's 1985 Love tour as their concert tees told--and they were sure going to do so again tonight as the tour of the same name came back around.

Accessible like Def Leppard but wielding a gothic edge like Morrissey or the Cure, the British band's major hits ("She Sells Sanctuary" and "Love Removal Machine") appear on Guitar Hero and undoubtedly drew in some fresh Gen Y fans--a few were speckled throughout the crowd this night and, like everyone else, grew weary as the time between bands stretched on. Finally, after what seemed like 10 years, the screen in front of the stage playing Beetlejuice lifted to reveal members of the Cult gravitating slowly to their instruments. The dance floor erupted with waving arms and flashes when lead singer Ian Astbury--who played frontman with original members of the Doors in The Doors Of The 21st Century---joined them to grasp the mic and a shiny, thick tambourine ("It was only $1.99," he said later, and threw it into the mass of black t-shirts that was the audience).

Starting out with a few mellower songs, it wasn't until "Rain" that the place really started to feel like an unstoppable monster of a rock show. Fans weren't allowed cameras of any kind (rumor has it the guitarist is a "bit of a primadonna"--unheard of!) so the main floor lit up with cell phones as, mid-set, Astbury led the band in a re-energized version of "She Sells Sanctuary":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BSVq6GcciM

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcmzYcLd0hU

Before making a few cheeky comments about new Viking Brett Farve, Astbury and Co. ended with their mid-'80s hit "Love Removal Machine," and most graciously didn't make fans wait for it via an encore. Overall, it was a special night of real live rock in Minneapolis that most in attendance won't soon forget, much like when they heard them the first time "way back when."

Thanks to kids1 and cultcentral for the Houston recap:

"OK - Here goes the review for the CULT show in Houston. First of all, the show was awesome; I just wish it was NOT at HOB- more on that later. Did get a treat for the fans, but announcement on that is pending.
They did play a kick ass version of Sun KIng- absolutely wonderful. Owl was in very fine form, and gave me a thumbs up while i was standing about two feet away from him and Dimkitch. Ian was lovely and polite. Lots of energy in Houston, which I know Ian thrives on. Show was sold out and scalpers were getting up to 500.00 per ticket on the street. People were paying it. ( As Houston did not announce the show publicly until one day before the concert) .
I am exhausted right now, only had two hours sleep, and will try my best to recount the show:
They did not open with LOVE, they opened with Nirvana. They took the stage around 9:30pm. Played until 11:20pm. Billy was in fine form and for once, did not have acoustic trouble with the arena- I know he was happy about that!!!
Set list:
Love
Big Neon Glitter- beautiful by Billy and Ian
Love Removal Machine - Owl did some AWESOME slides for my video in front of me. He is one of the COOLEST dudes on the planet.
Sun King- amazing, that is the only way I can describe it. Reminded me of Pink Pop, 92!!!!! Yeah, THAT GOOD...
Rise
Hollow Man- Billy's riffs were in fine form here.
Black Angel- beautiful video effects and a soul-ful rendition by Ian and company. A bit slower than previous shows, but it lent some magical aura to the performance.
As I mentioned , a special treat was SUN KING> energy was through the roof, and the crowd sang almost all the words.
On LRM, ( last song), the crowd sang more than Ian did!!! Awesome.
Sanctuary
Fire Woman- crowd went wild.
Billy concentrated more on the riffs and a little less on the banter than previous shows. Ian was feeling the good vibes and threw three tambourines, and one of them was thrown back on stage at Ian- WTF??
The lady next to me presented Ian with a dozen white roses, which he graciously accepted , right next to me. He even held the bouquet for a while. Nice.
On Owl- I cannot say enough how COOL he was . He saw I was wearing the Sacred Soul Badge, and appreciated the support. So did Ian, who spotted the badge and nodded , with a smile. Owl did some kick ass slides and crouching on stage so I could get good shots of him. We must have passed back and forth five
" thumbs up" between us. The Cult does love their fans, and , as usual , they delivered what only can be described as one of the finest live performances I have ever seen.

It was a night to remember.
I caught a lot of "Ianisms" on tape, but need to go back and look again to tell exactly what they were-LOL. will post later. Just wanted to give my review as soon as I could. More to come, as soon as I look over more notations. And, Get some ZZZZ's. Only had two hours sleep last nite. Amazing. Just fucking amazing!!!!
