Here's the "official" description of The Cult's new record "Born Into This" due 10/2:

Legendary Alternative Rock band The Cult return with all guns blazing on their eighth studio album 'Born Into This', their first in six years. Reminiscent of earlier works 'Love' and 'Electric', the album sees the band returning to their rock roots while embracing several modern sonic elements in many of the songs. With 'Born Into This', The Cult have created an album that not only speaks to their rabid fanbase, but seeks to put them squarely back on the map as one of the greatest straight-up rock & roll bands in the World. Quintessential Cult songs like 'Dirty Little Rockstar' and 'I Assasin' and their enormous hooks will allow them to do just that. Produced by Youth (Killing Joke, The Verve) and mixed by Clive Goddard (Primal Scream), the album is instantly recognizable Cult from Billy Duffy's first guitar chord to the first notes that escapes Ian Astbury's lips. A classic album from The Cult that features everything the band is known-for: groove-laden guitar riffs, searing leads, giant choruses, soaring vocals and a whole load of attitude. Over twenty years into their career and over 10 million albums sold, 'Born Into This', shows one of rock's first true Alternative bands delivering a seminal album at the top of their game.

A free MP3 of "I Assassin" from The Cult's forthcoming album, "Born Into This" has been made available from Roadrunner.

This from the Roadrunner site:

HAVE YOU JOINED THE CULT YET? - 8.29.2007
The Cult are giving you a new, free mp3 of their track "I Assassin." Coming off of their October 2nd release Born Into This, the track is not only a fantastic listen, but appropriately has a title derived from the name of a cult from long ago.

Like that? Go download yourself a copy of the digital single "Dirty Little Rock Star." It's breaking big on airwaves all over the world

The Cult Gets Back To Basics On 'Born Into This'

September 17, 2007, 11:30 AM ET

If the Cult's 2001 reunion album, "Beyond Good and Evil," was a heavily produced, muscular rock affair, the band took the opposite approach on the forthcoming "Born Into This," due Oct. 2 via New Wilderness/Roadrunner. The Cult cut the disc in 36 days with a mind toward re-embracing its punk-rooted past.

"Our last record, with all respect to [producer] Bob Rock ... we were guilty as much as he was, it was an overproduced record. We just went too far with it. It took about a year-and-a-half to make [and] an exorbitant amount of money," singer Ian Astbury tells Billboard.com. "This was one far more economic. We didn't want to get entrenched in debates of whether this is working or is this not working. If anything got a little bit drawn out, we just moved on to the next track."

The band, now featuring bassist Chris Wyse (Ozzy Osbourne) and drummer John Tempesta (Exodus, White Zombie), began demoing the disc in Argentina last year, and completed the core of the album over three weeks in West Hollywood, co-producing with Youth.

Astbury says the new album is also much more personal lyrically, based on experiences he's collected splitting time between London and New York and traveling to India, the inspiration behind the track "Holy Mountain."

"Going there but a boot up my ass," he says. "When you see people at that level of poverty and what they make of their lives and that humility and humbleness, it wakes you up. All the nonsense we go through each day, it's like the MTV awards the other day in Las Vegas -- that was obscene. Anybody who says that is cool needs their head examined."

"Born Into This" is the first album since the departure of drummer Matt Sorum, now one-fifth of Velvet Revolver. With Sorum gone, it became easier and somewhat of a no-brainer to adopt a more indie rock approach, says Astbury.

"Matt's a very grand figure, and a very theatrical figure. He's a big guy and he holds a lot of space. A lot of our songs -- especially the stuff we've been writing recently -- we broke the kit right down, and made it smaller," he says. "The kind of beats that I was going for were tribal beats, more punk rock, more direct. At some point, I got out the drum kit and started banging out some beats myself."

"These songs are filled with experience," he continues. "It's a passionate record with intent. It's full of real events, real observations and real people. All the ingredients were retained in making this record. We didn't filter it out. It's a real, true Cult record."

Looks as though the boys are doing the press thing for the "Born Into This" release of Oct 2.

Here's a Billy Duffy interview from HMV

http://www.hmv.co.uk/hmvweb/navigate.do?pPageID=1708

Billy Duffy initiates us into The Cult

What instigated the reformation?
I was contacted by Ian via the management team of the Doors of the 21st Century.

How does being on Roadrunner compared to being on Beggars and Atlantic?
Very early to tell but my feeling is that Roadrunner operate very much like Beggars Banquet and we enjoyed many happy years there...the Cult seem to work better within a framework of a big indie label.

In an interview with chartattack.com back in March this year you mentioned the album as being "trashy". Do you still feel the same way?
Whilst not specifically remembering the quote 'trashy' I think the new album has a freshness and immediacy about it that feels good and honest and of these times.

Is there a track the Cult would like to cover?
As far as a song both Ian and I would like to cover maybe something by David Bowie from the early 70's.

Ian filled Jim Morrison's footsteps by singing for The Doors Of The 21st Century/Riding On The Storm. Is there anyone you would like to play for?
I would love to play with a re-formed 'Free'...unlikely but miracles do happen.

You released the self-titled album 'Circus Diablo' in 2006 with former Cult member Billy Morrison amongst others. Are there any other past members of Cult's various guises you would like to work with?
As far as going back to play with past Cult alumni I can't confess to a burning desire as for the most part there is no going back..however I highly regard the musicianship of several of them.

Do the Cult have any plans for the future?
The Cult never plan for anything.

You co-star in the horror film 'Sin-Jin Smyth'. Can you tell us more about your role and how it came about?
I never actually made my 'movie' debut, the film got stalled and is yet to be completed...still into having a go at it but you can never believe all thats written on the internet can you? I actually was up for scoring the soundtrack but got offered the chance to play a psychotic FBI agent who specialized in torture...hard to resist eh?

Guest Questions supplied by Aki Nawaz (former member of Southern Death Cult)

The Cult were very vocal about the plight of the native Americans, their lyrics represented this aspect in the past, it is now invisible? What is the reason?
Hello Aki mate long time no see, how goes the revolution?...I beg to differ regarding the Native American thing, The Southern Death Cult was far more into that stance overtly on record than The Cult however in the very beginning as the Death Cult in 1983 it was still evident in the early recordings...I think after that Ian and the bands support became a little less overt professionally but still as passionate...more of an Ian question really to be honest...

The band keep splitting up and then reforming, is it because in your solo projects the chemistry is not right with others?
The splits tend to happen with burnout...we have to hibernate and re-charge...that's why and how we have lasted so long and are still active and making new music...Ian and I have a chemistry when we write together that is undeniable for me it's a blessing and I never count them...

You and Ian both came from a politicised punk movement is there any of that energy in what you do or do you feel that there is no "gain" from that particular stance? Are there any issues that you wish to talk about but never get the opportunity to do so? How do you feel about the "WAR ON TERROR"?
I think Ian has really never lost his connection to that era. Seeing the Sex Pistols at the second legendary Lesser Free Trade Hall gig in Manchester...July 20th 1976 (and still having the tickets and poster to prove it) changed my life for ever...as far as using any politics or anything else as a 'stance' in music could be considered a bit dodgy...I'm into it being fun...serious fun!

Do you feel you're just flogging a dead horse with the Cult or do you sense there will be bigger pastures to conquer? Is there another hit song in your hearts?
Personally I'm into being kind and trying to cause no harm or damage to this world or any other...that's my politics...

Why did you leave Beggars Banquet after so much success and do you feel comfortable with the new label?
I can find nothing more terrifying than having no air to breathe for instance...

Do you feel part of or any affiliation with the Great American Dream and what would you say to Mr Bush?
I have always liked the positive attitude and a demand for liberty and the persuit of happiness that America represented/represents to me...do not quite get the same vibe in the UK...there is also an equality and work ethic and a lack of a class system...as regards politics here i cannot vote as I am a British citizen but am as horrified by the last few years as any other sane human being on the planet...it has to and will change for the better I'm sure...worse things happend in the last century and we got through it...what i would say to the president is?...'buy the new Cult album 'Born Into This' and listen to it many times on your well earned retirement on a desert island...

Win Trip To See THE CULT In London - Sep. 18, 2007

Starting September 30, customers can head into their nearest Guitar Center and enter for a chance to win a VIP trip for two to see THE CULT live in London and watch from side stage. The prize package includes round-trip tickets for two, hotel accommodations and $1,000 dollars spending cash. And, if that wasn't enough, Roland/Boss is hooking up the winner with a $2,500 Guitar Center shopping spree. "We're excited to be working with Roland to be able to offer our customers this unique opportunity to see THE CULT, a band that is as relevant today as they were 20 years ago," states Darren Feldman, Director of Partnership Marketing for Guitar Center.

THE CULT, led by founding members, vocalist Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy, embarked on a series of European arena shows with rock legends THE WHO starting this past June. The band added headline dates and festival appearances along the route, building on the overwhelming reaction to their 2006 sold-out world tour. "Meeting THE CULT and watching from side stage is the coolest experience a CULT fan can have," exclaims Feldman.
