Any Tips on Quitting Smoking?
«
on:
January 14, 2006, 04:57:05 AM »
Is there any ex smokers here? How did you quit? I have been smoking for 16 years, and I am going to make another attempt at quitting. Its not easy. Giving up weed, meth, alcohol, etc. was a cakewalk compared to giving up cigarettes. A couple years ago, I quit for about 2 months, but I smoked weed constantly and it took the edge off. Now cigarettes is my only addiction. Any ideas?

This guy at my office smoked all his life too. One day he just decided he was quitting. He put the money he was spending towards cable TV which he didn't have.. so he immediately saw a reward (plus it was locked into a contract so he had to keep to it otherwise he would of been poor!).. he just avoided going downstairs outside during the day at all (as obviously thats where the smokers all stood around) and every time he was tempted he had these chocolate sticks in his drawer so had one. He even had carrot sticks!

Like GunnerDownUnder said, transferring the need onto something else is a good idea. Set small target for yourself. Don't smoke for a day and you get 5 cigarettes reward. Then don't smoke for 2 days, and so on.
Hopefully by the end of say a month or two you'll see the difference in cash you have free and spend it on something more useful.

On the tips side, don't try and reduce it and go down bit by bit, it doesn't work or at least i find it does not. Avoid areas where you'll be tempted for a few weeks, even if it means locking yourself away, when you decide to quit just STOP! I've tried many times, i haven't smoked now since a week last thursday, now when i get some money i will buy some green but i'm definately stoping off cigs, i don't actually miss them to much, but green fuck i miss that.....
....to save my lungs i may switch to baking cakes

I smoked for... 4 years? 5 years? I dunno. But that's how I quit 2 months and a half ago and.. I have no desire for cigarettes. At all.

Eat Smart
Smoking cessation throws our bodies into shock initially. If you take care to give your body the fuel it needs to run properly, you'll find that you're better able to cope with the discomforts of nicotine withdrawal. Have the right foods within easy reach and you'll minimize weight gain due to quitting.
Get Your Sleep
When you're tired, cravings to smoke will seem stronger while you feel less able to manage them. Fit a full 8 hours of sleep in every night, and a nap here and there if you need it. If you have trouble sleeping when you first quit smoking, try taking a long walk a couple of hours before bed.
Drink Water
Water will help to flush residual toxins out of your system, and beat back cravings to smoke. When you're well-hydrated, you'll feel better in general, which is a plus when you're going through nicotine withdrawal.
Get Moving
If you already have a daily exercise regimen, good for you! If not, start now. Choose something you enjoy doing, and you'll be more likely to stick with it. Aim for a half hour of exercise every day. Walking is a great way to move and it's a quick fix for the urge to smoke. Get out for a 15 minute walk around the block and you'll come back refreshed and relaxed.
Renew Resolve Daily
Your determination to quit smoking is built one day at a time. Every smoke free day makes you stronger, and when you consciously take time to reflect and rejoice in the value of what you're doing, you're working to fortify your will to make this the quit that lasts you a lifetime.
Adopt an Attitude of Gratitude
Think about the blessings in your life. We all have them. Be thankful for the freedom you're creating for yourself today. Remember that you've wanted to quit smoking for a long time and you're finally doing something about it. List out the benefits you see in your health and overall being due to quitting tobacco. It has been said that gratitude unlocks the fullness of life, and I believe that! Make gratitude a daily conscious part of your life.
Accept and Let It Go
Relax and embrace cravings to smoke as they come. Don't fight - lean into urges and ride them out. Most cravings last 3-5 minutes. Think of them as signs that your body is healing - that is just what they are.
Don't Fall for Junkie Thinking
Quitting tobacco is a gift, not a sacrifice. Don't sabatoge yourself by feeling sorry that you can't smoke. You are choosing not to smoke because you want to be free of this killer of an addiction. Keep your perspective!
Be Patient
Just as Rome wasn't built in a day, people don't quit smoking in a day either. Most of us had 20 years or more of smoking under our belts before we quit. Give yourself the gift of time and patience. Work to undo old patterns and replace them with newer, healthier choices. Each day you complete smoke free brings you closer to lasting freedom.

I quit last year reading Allen Carr's book. I had smoked since I was 14 years old (I'm 30 now), a pack a day. It's been really easy for me, I had made the attempt a couple of times before by just deciding to stop but it didn't work out. That book just made it simple for me. I quit smoking and it didn't even seem difficult, no bad temper, etc.
Good luck!!!

Eliminate all stress first. Choose a comfortable relaxed time - get the patch - wear it for 12 hours not 24 - you never had nicotine while sleeping anyhow. Best of all stay resolved. I quit and went back when my dad got really sick with cancer, my uncle died, I broke up with my GF, my car got toasted, my aunt died and got suspended from my job for 2 weeks. Other than that - it was only the stress that made me start again.

Cakes don't compare with a good smoke. Yeah they're fun and all, but nothing compares.
If you're wanting to save your lungs and keep off the baccy just get yourself a bong.
Oh yeah, and if you want to quit smoking fags the best tip i can give you is don't smoke them.

Can't afford a decent bong at the moment but yeah i'll probably go with that then as for quitting smoking fags, i'm getting there, quite well actually. Thing with bongs is they don't compare to smoking a joint, at least not for me, i just love having a joint in hand but my lungs are my priority, blunts are an option, just a very expensive one....
