Little Les Paul question (please help)
«

Okay I'm getting a brand new ebony Les Paul Standard my question is 50's neck or 60's neck. The shop I'm getting it from only had 60's neck in stock I played it and it's great but they said they can order in a 50's neck if I want. What should I do? What's the difference? Which is better or is it a question of taste?
Any help much appreciated

I personally have no clue, but if it amkes a difference i beleive slash had the 50's neck since his Lp's are generally 50's models.

60's necks are medium/thinnish
50's necks are thicker
comes downt to preference.
i have little bigger then average hands but i still like 60's necks much more.

Yeah. I think the 50's necks being thicker, give more sustain?

the thickness of the neck doesn't really effect sustain all that much.
In the end it really is about what fits you better playing wise... I prefer the thinner 60's neck, but happen to own a 50's style neck. For me.. It doesn't really matter. I play just as bad with both of them...

Right, fretboard size has to do with comfort for the most part. I prefer the 60s neck myself. I believe the 50s neck is 25.5 scale, and the 60s neck is 24.75 scale. Most all of the Strats are 25.5 scale.

Yea, I believe a Tele would be 25.5 scale as well.

NO, NO, NO!!!
The 50's and 60's necks have nothing to do with scale!!!
ALL
Les Pauls are 24" 3/4 compensated scale. The difference between 50's and 60's necks are the thickness. Thr 50's necks are thicker and 60's are slightly slimmer. The thicker neck will probably sustain better but will probably be less comfortable if you wanna play fast.

Yeah.. But I seriously doubt that the gain in sustain will be all that noticeable.. I'd say that the body has more to do with that. Plus I've heard really thin guitars with unbelieveable sustains so one shouldn't really read too much into it... But it is true, that in theory it would have a better sustain.

a perfect 60ies neck has more sustain than a shitty 50ies neck.
you can't and you HAVE to compare those two.
Slash plays a slightly thinner 59' neck. not as thin as the 60's.
In a perfect world were all wood is perfect, and you have to excact same model LP's.
Then the thicker neck will have more sustain. Some claim the tone is better on the thicker neck too, but it all boils down to what tone you want. Some guitarist will easily spot the lack of sustain, some won't care about it. Some use sustain helpers or boosters to compensate.
But back on topic,
the 50'ies is indeed the same SCALE as the 60'ies. it has to do with thickness.
play both!! I started with a 60ies neck and actually sold it... 'cus it was so darn thin i couldn't use it. not because my fingers are fat, but because I'm such a slow player I play better on a 50ies

well if its a vintage it'll say like '59 les paul or 68' les paul or for instance at
www.musiciansfriend.com
under their standards in the description it says 60's neck. Also I think 60's necks are usually used on lp's.

but i have a standard from 03 and i know they came both in 50 and 60, but i don't know what mine is... i'm guessing it's a 50 cuz it feels kind of fat compared to most ephi lp's, but then again it's not nearly as fat as my neck through mockingbird so i just don't know... not that it really matters, but it is nice to know i guess...
