LANSDALE, Pa. -- A Pennsylvania student is off the hook after the American Civil Liberties Union defended his right to wear a political T-shirt to school.

Chris Schiano's T-shirt said "International Terrorist" and had a picture of President Bush.

A security guard at his high school north of Philadelphia told him to take it off. He refused.

Schiano says he's well versed in the First Amendment. He says he "knew right off they had no legal footing to stand on."

The principal says after hearing from the ACLU, school officials realized that the shirt, while potentially offensive, didn't violate the school's dress code. It had no references to sex, drugs, ethnic intimidation or explicit language.

Schiano says he's now wearing the shirt to school and no one's given him a hard time.

Yay! I remember having to turn my "mean people suck" shirt inside out, back in the day.

I was sent home for having the knees torn out of my jeans back in the day. Seems silly by todays standards.

I sure wasn't political by any means at that age like this awesome kid.

Good for him!

Its hilarious (and deeply troubling) that America is like this

You could wear that t-shirt over here with no problem - and the idea that 'international terrorist' could be viewed as offensive!

America seems a very strange place....over here you could rant and rave about the evils of the country and our glorious dictator and no one would care, and u could burn the flag all day and people would probably ask you what country that flag belonged to - its a different world over here, and it seems to be a much better one.

The US was founded upon some amazing concepts and SHOULD continue to uphold those worthy ideals, but sadly, that's far from the case (See views expressed on this forum alone). We've devolved into a pathetic sham state, living in our fading memories of the glory days.

I agree and if students wanted to wear anti Clinton shirts back in the day they should be allowed to.

Although I don't remember any liberals trying to stop those from being worn....... Tongue

You can do all of those things over here.? Yah we do care though.? If I see someone burning an American flag, certainly they have the right to do so, but I am going to think they are an idiot.? If you like having your flag burnt, so be it.? Anyone that loves their country probably wouldn't agree though.

There is a big difference between this country and others in Europe.  I'm not sure I would characterize it as a better one though.  Some may think so, but I would disagree.

You guys are clueless. First Amendment rights are forfeited in institutions of learning, and for good reason. Children who don't know what they're talking about have no right to spread ignorance to others and potentially disrupt the learning environment. Also note that the school can still punish students for wearing shirts about sex, drugs, etc. The school is still in control; they just gave this mouth-breather a break, since he likely won't be going far in life. Bush an international terrorist...  rofl

People shouldn't express themselves politically until they can appreciate respect for authority, an established hierarchy, and strong traditional values. This student has no idea what he's saying.

I just think this story is funny as fuck since I bought my little nephew that exact shirt for Christmas Grin

I remember back in my day of highschool I got sent to the office for wearing a shirt that said "If this is highschool, where do we get high?" hihi

Im careful about the shit I wear in public now though, cause you just dont know who you'll end up offending, the most explicit of my "drug shirts" now is a lime green one that says "Legalize everything" Tongue

After living in Spain and travelling through Europe I came to the conclusion that the U is hardly the land of the free.  I think we tell ourselves that to make us all feel better.
