TNS didn't get to play Liverpool by sitting on their arses the whole of the season, prior to the game.  they weren't a terrible side, same goes for any other team that earns the right to try to qualify for the champions league!

I stand by what I said, and think that, on a strictly attacking level, Lampard is superior to Gerrard. It's that Gerrard is so much better at everything else that makes him the better player.

they didn't make it into the champions league! so you can't compare them to champions league standards! i agree with the lampard comments tho. gerrard is the better player but i guess lampard is the better attacker of the two. its hard to tell though. i'd love to see them both swap clubs for a game and see how they'd play

Well in that case I have a question for you, mate.

Say that Rooney is fit, as is Owen. You're playing against an attack minded midfield that are going to put your back four under a lot of pressure. For the good of the team, you want to start with a holding midfielder, somebody who can keep on top of their defensive duty while providing quality distribution. Obviously your first choice is going to be Carrick, though it doesn't have to be. Maybe you're a Hargreaves man... In any case, who are you going to drop?

Gerrard is the better complete player, while Lampard is the better going forward. Who do you opt to take off in order to change the formation......

But of course, you're probably of the thinking that your best eleven players make up your best team for any given situation. Yuk yuk yuk.

I would take Gerrard in a holding role any day of the week over Carrick. I'd take Gerrard over Lampard 120% of the time as an attacking player. You said yourself, Gerrard is a better all round player, so what would you rather against a good attacking opposition, a midfielder who can defend and attack, or one who can just defend?

Say you're playing Brazil and Rooney and Owen are both fit, they are no-brainers for starting. Why would you play Lampard (who by your own admission can't defend) with Carrick leaving Carrick to defend against the best offensive midfield in the world. Surely it would be a much more sensible idea to play Carrick and Gerrard, both where Gerrard is just as good (ok matter of opinion, I personally think he's better than lampard attacking, you don't, but you can't say there's a lot in it, or that he's inneffective in the role) at going forward, but he can defend as well.

Lampard has had a couple of good seasons, after coming to prominence after being shit for west ham for years. Gerrard has been club captain for over 3 years in a shit side consistently outperforming every other midfielder in the league.

Gerrard has also shown time and time again that he, is a big game player. He steps up when it's needed of him and he never gives up. Lampard has shown that he's hunch-backed and can't take penalties.

I say enough of this craziness.  Start with Gerrard AND Lampard, only bringing on Carrick if we have a lead to defend.  If Sven wants to play the diamond formation he can just place Gerrard further back - he'd still have the chance to charge forward every so often or have a shot from distance.  Both players bring a lot of quality into the team and it'd be a shame to have to drop one of them.

I don't understand why Hargreaves and Carrick are both in the squad.  Couldn't Sven choose between the two?  We have Carragher as well so that's three players who can fill that hole.
