Yeah, 2006 is certainly A Perfect year for Chinese democracy.
But Come on, why should he and his mates give up their hell long endeavour even though they miss this round. And why should we?
An Opportunity may knock only once but there will be always another while there is life.
Chinese democracy stands for positive changes that look impossible outwardly at the time but are unavoidable in the current of the times. People will put them as Historical necessity, afterwards.
Didn't Axl, referring to Chinese democracy, talk about the deep emotion he was filled with at a scene in a film, where the supporters of the dalai lame frees their hope at the risk of their lives?
Likewise they will accomplish it, cost what it may. No matter how long it takes.

I think Silkworms was a test. Axl wanted to test the audience reaction to very industrial songs. Logically, the reaction was pretty "cold", maybe even "frozen", wich is totally normal for me considering it's far very far away from GN'R kind of music.. ?It seems Axl tested a lot of thing in 2002. it may also explain the delays. Maybe he wrote a couple of industrial songs ala "silkworms" before 2002 and finally decided to scrap them down because he had a bad feeling about how the general public would react.

Perhaps Silkworms was to lower expectations!
Axl had no part in writing Silkworms-that was Reed and Pittman's 'masterpiece'
I wouldn't worry about the material-everything (save Silkworms) has been strong, if not excellent in some cases (The Blues, IMO).
The impression I get is not that Axl cares so much about living up to critical standards (and, BTW, most reviews I read about the 2002 tour praised the new material, even if they hated seeing the new guns cover older stuff). Nor is it about changing the music scene---it's all about living up to his own standards-which, if you believe anyone who's ever worked with him, are extremely high-Brian Wilson-like high. the problem is, when you have those type of standards, it's pretty hard to get anything done, because something will always strike you as not right. But Axl has to realize (at least I hope he does) that the window is closing to make a comeback--he's going to be what? 45 or 46 in Ferbruary? The older you get, the harder it is to make a splash in the mainstream music market, in terms of album sales, where youth is king, for the most part. There's always touring, but I really dont want to see a 60-year-old man singing "It's So Easy"--I want something a little more introspective.

Will he care about the album sales so much when he's 60?

well..... you`re right it doesn`t mean it won`t come out. but i wont get excited about anything, that`s for sure. i think a rio appearance is very likely and the release in '06, too. but if in the second half of '06 there`s still no sign of CD than it looks very dark......

All this talk about Silkworms makes me feel that I'm the only one here that likes that tune
. The lyrics are just venomous, and with that slow hook at the end, i think it's a badass song myself.

How much does he care about them now? If it were all about album sales, I'd think he'd put out a product no matter what the quality-the Guns name in and of itself pretty much assures anything he releases of going platinum. I think there is something more aesthetic (big word!) going on with Axl--he wants this to be his "Sgt. Pepper" in terms of how its percieved in the longterm by his peers.

True, and I don't want Axl to not be aggressive, but you can be agressive and show a maturity and freshness too.

Silkworms is a really good song. Love the song structure, especially where you would expect a typical rock guitar lead, they play more mellow guitar/synth thing. Im sure if we ever see an official release there will be a few revisions.

Im playing Devils advocate here, its just we have been saying the same shit since 2002.
Pretty soon we have to stop making excuses for Axl and start looking at it with a different set of eyes.
I agree about Its So Easy, If I never hear another AFD song on tour Ill be extremely happy.
I know u gotta play some hits but I am sick of that album to be honest.

Playing a majority of old songs (at least 60 %) is a "must do" thing for the band to have good ticket sales. Most of people will come to hear the old classics. It's the same for every legendary Rock band. People go to a U2 gig to hear One, sundy bloody sunday or the streets have no name. They come to an Oasis gig to hear Wonderwall, Don't look back in anger or Supersonic. They come to a rolling stones gig to hear satisfaction or jumping jack flash... it's the same for every "big" Rock band.
I think they should play the new songs progressively, starting with 3 or 4, then 5 or 6 and finally 8 or 9 new songs and 11 or 12 old ones. if it's not little by little, step by step, There will be poor ticket sales.
people want to hear jungle, sweet child, knocking, nightrain, patience, november rain and paradise city. It's the strict minimum for a GN'R show.

I think GUNS gotta hold on to a couple of old songs, but if Chinese Democracy are good enough, then they dont have to play the old songs to get people to theyr show...

If Axl continues in his current vein of alientiation of old fans, there'll only be "new" fans to play for hence, only CD will be required

True but I doubt Axl will go back to a 2002 setlist. Do you honestly think Axl wants to play the old stuff the way he did in 02 when he has an album out?
I firmly believe the band will be playing the majority if not all of Cd and throw in some classics. But nothing like the 02 setlist. Basically the exact opposite. All new some old....

Yea but I dont think you can look at GNr this way. Plus I dont think GNR will promote themselves that way. I dont think Axl is gonna promote the band as a classica band with a new album. I Think its gonna be about CD. Of course theyll play some hits but the tour, the interviews will be geared towards CD.
I think GNR already have taken that step. The first step was playing the old songs. Just getting out there, gelling as a band, getting down the live stuff...in the meantime you got to hear the classics. As Axl said..."he considers it as a reunion tour". And when he talks to Loder at the vmas he talks about moving on in stages. I think phase 1 is done.
Now its time for what we have all been waiting for. Axl got to test the waters with OMG, and the 2002 stuff. Now its time for CD. GNr will be all about that album.
as for silkworms....it rocks!

I'd like to see a majority C.D. tour.. not AFD.. if the material is strong enough and C.D. sells well then why not? Its time for Axl to put up or shut up in my opinion.. if you wanna bury Appetite.. then do it. If you just want to keep old fame then shut your mouth and cancel C.D! Do a reunion tour. Jesus....
Also.. to whoever said that Guns NEED to play the old stuff to have good ticket sales because other "classic" bands need to... this is a different line-up, trying to be relevant! This isn't the rolling stones or ac/dc.. this is GN'R.. a NEW GN'R.. I mean if C.D. is a sucess then Axl will be POPULAR again. Not in a "o an old guy is putting out another record".. but in a "wow a new kickass record is out!" kinda way.
I mean.. if CD bombs.. or if the material sucks.. then I agree with you.. Axl would need to play the old stuff.. but if not.. then whats the big deal in not playing AFD? Im all up for the occasional old song.. or maybe even 40-60... but nothing more.
Quote
Actually, that film maker thought it sucked. The song was This I Love, not TWAT. I agree with everything else you said. peace
The film maker didn't say it sucked.. he said.. something about it being a heartfelt song and that he was sad it didn't show up on the soundtrack. (i cant find the exact quote.. but im looking..)
