Many of us think that terrorism is a result of desperation, that when poor, uneducated people have nowhere left to turn, they turn to radical fundamentalism and terrorism.  But if you think about it, most terrorists we hear about in the media our not poor or uneducated.  Most of the Palestinian suicide bombers are middle-class...so were the 9/11 hijackers.  Osama bin Laden is a multi-millionaire, for crying out loud...why is he the czar of radical Islamic terrorism?  Why do these privileged people feel compelled to commit such horrible acts?

I think it is important to differentiate between the leaders of the terrorist cells, and the ones that simply follow.   Many of the followers are young males who have little else to do since their country/government is so restrictive.  And when I speak of education, it's not just 2+2 = 4, it's learning on a broad scale.  I know for a a fact that the school systems in these countries purposely distort the truth (history, sociology, you name it).  So, I should clarify and say they need a proper education.

As for the leaders - they will be different.  But in order to be powerful, they need followers.  You cant eradicate every single power-crazy person on earth, but you can try to make the people less sheep-like so they dont follow them.

Perhaps culture is the filter through which we use our education.  

Good point...  American culture is filled with graphic violence and sex (Hollywood style shoot-em up).  European culture is saturated with the ghosts of their colonialist past.   Arab culture is dominated by religion.  A lot of people use religion as a filter on how they perceive things.  Does this produce bigots and terrorists?  Perhaps it does - of any color, any nationality, any income-tax bracket...

 I think the paramount reason would have to be a lack of education.  Research has shown that the more educated people are, the more tolerant they're likely to be.  Right now, Arabs tend to have little education and be indoctrinated from birth that America is "The Great Satan".

The problem is that even educated Muslims feel the same way as the uneducated.  They just try to prove their beliefs in a differant way. They still hate us and they still want us killed.


It is safe to say that the overwhelming majority of Muslims hate America and Americans, and it doesn't matter what education level they are at.

I dont have a gun... Ive spent 10 years living on various Military bases around the world... There are soldiers in my backyard... you have no idea what it takes to defend a military base overseas or put up with the Drills, Terrorist Threats... Protests... Riots....  ummm so yeah I do know...

Okey you've been there ... but I guess you don't get the situation then ... My cousin lived in GazA for nearly three years so I know what the the situation is down there ... I don't stand up on one side ... I don't support neither camps what needs to be achieve is peace. The majority of the Plestinian and israelian population wants peace.

I do answer topics in here when I come across things that actually make me sick... I do like America, I do like Americans ... but I just can't stand the "nuke 'em all" kind of arguments.

I was against a war in Iraq last year but now I'm in favor of a stay of the American troops down there until elections are set up. This is true.  One would think that education would allow tolerance and understanding, but it doesn't in this case.  Unfortunately, educated Muslims still have the same beliefs as their uneducated peers.

I've been to America two times as I have some relatives living in the east coast and I don't know if I've just been lucky but the americans I've met have pretty much been the nicest people I've ever met and I feel a lot more comfourtable with my american relatives than my finnish ones.
