Seen him twice with STP, once with VR.? The man never ceases to amaze me.? If you look at the progression he took with STP, you'll notice that every album he sounds different.? ?So I'm excited about what he will bring to the table on the next VR album.

1- I was a huge STP fan. A very underrated band and lead singer. His lyrics, though most of the time didn't make sense, were different. The song melodies amazing. Great voice and an incredible stage performer.
2.- I liked the idea when he joined Slash and the boys. I was looking forward to it and very excited about VR.
3.- Everything changed. Contraband songs are average. Lyricwise I felt very dissapointed. A 24 yeard old wanna be rock star could've wrote Contraband. Also, he seemed to believe the whole world was against him and in every interveiw I read of him, he always said how much pressure the press put on him and how he hated the media blah, blah, blah...
I'm looking forward the next VR album to see how different Weiland is gonna sound. I believe the "Contraband" Weiland was not sincere. Maybe next album will see different.
Contraband left a little to be desired but you have to remember they were barely a band when they recorded it! half the songs were already written,. Now they have chemistry after touring for so long. They know each others strenghts. And besides they wanted to put out a straight forward debut rock n roll album and establish that they are a rock n roll band. Expect better production, longer solos, better lyrics and an evolved VR sound. You won't be able to tell that these guys came from gnr and stp just watch! they have developed their own sound and that my friends is exciting!

1. When he was in Stone Temple Pilots I thought he was awesome. I loved his vocals with that group. That was the era of grunge, but in my opinion, he brought a heavier rock vibe to the mix. They had great songs and were a great band.
2. I think he was the best choice for VR. He has a lot of energy and edge to give the band an element of excitement. I also thought it was cool how he changed his singing voice for this record. When I heard Contraband for the first time, it didn't even sound like the same guy from STP. He's more melodic, but still edgy, which is a good balance.
3. Contraband is an excellent album. I saw them in concert earlier this year and it was a lot of fun. I can't wait for the next album and tour.

That's my exact opinion on the matter (except the very start I really enjoyed Contraband!!), since the guys are now an established unit and know each other's strengths and weaknesses, they should really be able to pull off something special.

You hit it in the nail, that's how I feel, Scott is not really scott on contraband, he wanted to fit in with the other guys so he created the persona of a troubled rock n roll star = not very sincere s an image
HOPE THE NEXT ALBUM WILL BE BETTER

Maybe the losing of the drug habit is what's changed Scott's approach to writing. He is fuelled by different inspirations?

No offense, but that might be one of the most ill informed statements made in these parts in a while.
Scott was the poster child for "troubled rock n roll star" during the recording of Contraband, no need to conjure any false persona to "fit in".
Not liking the album is your opinion, but accusations of insincerity are a bit much...

Falcon, if you listen to the STP albums you'll notice a totally different pattern lyricwise. Weiland is a brilliant lyricist (this is when I do find sense to some of his lyrics) but in Contraband, there's no originality. The songs are about what you expect from a regular rock and roll band's singer. Him Vs the world. There's a few execptions like You got no right and loving the alien, but I miss the brilliance of "Tiny Music" and "Purple". Does that make him insincere? WEll, it depends how you look at it, but, it sure makes you wonder...

That's a matter of opinion.

At that point in his life, Him vs. The World was probably an accurate portrayal of how he felt as a man in the throws of addiction and subsequent rehab/recovery.

I look at it from an artists' perspective.? Generally speaking, a lyricist will write about things affecting his life during a specific period of time, I think Scott's work on Contraband reflects just that.

yeah, but scott had been an addict since 94 and had already been through tumultuous times before -many times-....and never acted the way he did on contraband
the whole thing just sounds a bit faked to me, and to other people as well it seems.

So??
Sounds to me you just didn't relate to his lyrical content on Contraband and are justifying that by questioning his motives/inspiration.
Getting warm?

Such lyirical content you ar referring to is what makes you wonder...let me explain. For me, songs like "Falling to pieces" and "You got no right" are very sincere and honest due to the fact that he's talking about his personal relationship with his wife. As we all know, at the time, Scott was separated from his wife and those songs come accross as being honest. Truth is though, there a billion songs about break ups but those songs do sound honest and sincere.
The other songs we are referring to sound like he's trying to fit somebody else's shoes. To me, sounds like he's gotta fit in lyrically now that he's on the spot with Velvet Revolver. With STP it was more like his band, a very successful band, but they never created the hype Velvet Revolver did before they release the album. His new ship had a very different crew this time, Slash, Duff and Matt. I'm not saying them three are/were better than the De leo brothers, but sure they are more well known and controversial.? This makes me wonder if Scott wanted to fit in lyrically with his new band. A band with former members of one of the most acclaimed and critized bands ever in the history of music, and a record of "bad" relationships with the media.

He's a good (read: good but not great) frontman. I met him once, briefly, and he seemed a bit aloof. But then, plenty of people say that about Axl...

1. I loved STP (one of my top 10 bands) and felt that Scott was an amazing singer. He can do so many different things with his voice and he just takes total command of a songs.
2. When he was chosen I had mixed feelings, I knew he was a great singer, but I couldn't imagine his style clashing with Slash and Duff's very well.
3. I liked Contraband, I think it could have been better tho. I think Scott did a good job, but it wasn't his best work. I think with more time togeather tho their next album will be much better than Contraband. Scott's never let me down before (well he pushed it on Tiny Muisc..), and I have no reason to think he will in the future.
