Every YEAR around this time and then again in late Jan these rumors start up......EVERY year.  If they were going to release CD this year, it would only make sense to do it BEFORE or right at Thanksgiving.  Not in the middle of Dec.   Every freakin' year............it's funny, if it wasn't so annoying.

Every bloody  year the same confusing december discussion about wether CD might appear or not...As far as I can remember some stupid rumour always appeared hinting for an end of the year release. If an album should be released on december 6th however, it might be announced next week since most releases are announced one month in advance!

Thanksgiving may not matter, but in America, the day after Thanksgiving is a HUGE shopping day.  I don't know if Europe has anything comparable, but here it is the biggest shopping day of the year.  So it is significant.  I don't know if its a good day to release music or not, but it has nothing to do with the holiday per say.  It is all about the millions of dollars that get spent the day after Thanksgiving.  I've worked in retail, and you spend months preparing for the day after Thanksgiving.  And the shopping doesn't stop until a couple days after Christmas.

Date 1: November 29 (Single?)
Date 2: December 6 (Album?)

Richard: "soon"
Tommy: "very soon"
Dizzy: "very very soon"

Hm...

While everyone wrote them off (for this year, if not forever) and is expecting the album to hit (if ever) next March, could this be the shock-and-awe version of the release?

Has anyone taken into consideration that the album could be released without a single? Its happened before. Didn't Pearl Jam do it with their album VS? I know 'Daughter' got played on the radio, but I dont think it was ever released as a single. I also think Mariah Carey did that with a couple of her albums. Neither PJ or mariah never suffered from poor album sales because of the decision.

Yes daughter was a single, I have it, but i dunno if it was released before or after the album was.

At the same time...No you don't need to release singles before albums. in fact you rarely see singles for sale in Canada, dunno about the US. I think they are quite popular in Europe though.

As a whole I think the people on this board blow the promotion necessary for an album wayyy out of proportion

Except for one small thing:

Holiday shopping around the world starts right after that US holiday.  Doesn't really matter where you are....

And, in case you hadn't noticed, GnR is a US based band.  So, when releasing albums, they tend to gear that release date to when they will sell the most copies in the US.  Given "Black Friday" and how much revenue is generated on that day, and in the weeks leading up to X-mas......

So it really is a valid point of discussion.

I donno but I personally don't remember seeing a very important CD release for the Christmas shopping season.

I thought that time of the year was for anthologies and compilations.

Yeah you're right.  I think it has shifted towards rap/hip hop and anthologies around Thanksgiving in previous years.  Two years ago it was Jay-Z.  I think last year U2 and the Nirvana set.  It seems like rock bands have been focusing on the summer releases which probably tie hand in hand with stadium tours and festivals, ie. Velvet in June 04, Weezer, Audioslave, Foo, NIN this summer in May and June.
