After reading some of the recent threads, I had a question regarding the morphing of the 1987 version of the band and the UYI version.

I have read that some of you feel the UYI era was a WTF? section of GN'R history. What is do damn bad about growing up? A person grows up, a band grows up, their music matures...

I despise the fact that some of you dislike the illusion era...not because you don't like them...but because of the reasons you site for disliking. You've got to give the band credit for breaking new ground instead of getting stale.

If you ask me...bands like Metallica and AC DC made the same albums over and over again. If a band could be as versitile as Jungle to Patience to November Rain To Live and Let Die to Since I don't Have you these days, we might have real talent on our hands instead of these one dimensional gay bands that we have to endure now.

Axl said something the effect of, "I will not live my life through that one album." I say cheers to that.

Cool thread! Every band needs to evolve otherwise the 'hype' will soon die out. Even if the new GNR album sucks Axl can be happy because this is how he wanted it to sound. Izzy evolved in 1991 and did what he wanted to, GNR fans can say his solo music sucks but at least he too is doing what he wants  Cheesy

My problem with the UYI era gnr was the evolution of the Live show. Tracy and Roberta and gimme some reggae.

But as an aside i don't think the evolution you are talking about came necessarily from the band members getting more mature, but from getting more money and fame. They went from doing what needed to be done to doing what was the biggest and most expensive thing that could be done.

As albums the UYI's kicked major ass, but looking back it's obvious that things were unraveling rather rapidly

TSI is my WTF evolution part of GnR history

GN'R is but a memory now in pop culture - resting in several pieces.

Evolution may apply if and when CD sees light of day.

Well, you should listen Justice, then the Black album, then Load. Roll Eyes

"Evolution" doesn't mean doing suddenly bad music and massively changing your original sound. When I hear "oh my god" or "silkworms" I don't call it an "evolution" for GN'R, I just call it very bad music.

Here's a definition of evolution:

"a process of continuous change from a lower, simpler, or worse to a higher, more complex, or better state"

Concerning UYI's there was alot of different sounds on them. So there was an evolution of sorts from AFD for GnR because They were more diversified and they explored lots of different types of songs.

Now from UYI's to what we have heard from CD

is the Blues a more complex song than say Breakdown, Yesterdays or Don't Cry? Not in my opinion. They are pretty close. In fact i could even see the blues having a place on UYI's

Is Madagascar more complicated than Civil War? not really prolly a step back, But that's just me,the sound is more "modern" i guess, for lack of a better term.

How does CD or OMG compare to the rockers from UYI's? They're pretty grungy sounding Tons of Distortion not alot of picking.  Not even close to YCBM or pretty tied up in my opinion. But again they are way different from them too

Every version of Rhiad is pretty crappy and IRS is impossible to hear anything. so my judgement is reserved for those tunes.

Silkworms is like a Rave tune or something. Like a parody of Prodigy. Just wayyyyyy, wayyyy to different.

Overall I don't think there will be a forward evolution, but more of like a sidestep. I mean the whole band has changed. Of course they are gonna sound different. The thing we should be discussing is Has Axl's lyrics and songwriting evolved from UYI's. It's just not fair to compare these guys to the orig band IMO.

The evolution of the Illsuion Era is more or less the inclusion of norns, 15 backing vocals, the orchestra etc.

Many of the songs were written pre or same time as AFD

everyone alwats loves to knock ac/dc or metallica, yet unlike gnr they had longevity,.. Metallica put out damn good albums longer then gnr did.. So it's possible thayt if gnr continued they were bound to put out some lemons too. With songs like sanitarium, whiplash, fade to black, for whom the bell tolls, master of puppets, damn the black album.. They did major epic rockers that fucking kicked ass.. Either way ac/dc or metallica can sell out any venues they play.. To me the black album shoed a different sidfe to metallica

Metallica and ac/dc have more songs on rotation these days then gnr... Not bad ror groups that never change

Or rather some call your taste in music very badly limited. ok

somewhere down the line it become trendy to knock metallica.. maybe it was after they cut their hair, or after load or relaod or using the orchestra.... People are far to hard on them.... having kill em all, ride the lightning, master of puppets, and justice for all and the black album they gave some diverse music and quite lengthy kick ass songs played amazingly live.. i was not a fan of st anger but their good far out weighs their bad..

a setlist like

one
master of puppets
'four horsemen
sanitarium
for whom the bell tolls
whiplash
fade to black
eneter sandman
unforgiven
sad but true
until it sleeps
nothing else matters
fuel

I think alone those songs rock, some more then tohers but pure examples that metallica can flat out play so heavy and be so sensitive at the same time.. They always gave the bang for the buck... Some of those songs listed above have great instrumentals.. Kicking ass to ONE or Master of puppets beer
