« on: October 02, 2005, 07:25:26 AM »

Hey,

I play a bit of Acoustic guitar and I have been really thinking about playing the Bass latley?  Except I don't think my parents are too keen on paying for a bass if I don't end up going through with it.  So does anyone have any ideas/advice??  Like whats playing bass like?  Expensive?  What to buy?  What songs to play?  Anything!!!  ok

Thankyou all so much!!  Smiley

Get a Yamaha Bass.

Around $400 Australian. sure it won't look too good but atleast it wont fall to bits.

If you start plaing bass your gonna remind me of that Auf Der Mar chick. The hot red head chic bassist from Hole who went solo.

Also, please dont be one of those people that buy an instrument, play it as much as they can for one month then get sick of it and never play it again. You gotta stay determined. Keep that rock n roll dream in you mind every time you think "ah im no good at bass". Good luck with it ok

Man, nothing beats playing GnR on bass (well, maybie playing GnR on guitar but well...) just because its easy but with SO MUCH attitude.
When I think of great players I sont really thing of Billy Sheehan or that Dream Theater chinese dude, I think of Duff, Rachel Bolan, the Alice In Chains one (shit, i cant remember his name), those one with the attitude with a capital A.
I`m a guitar player who hapens to own a bass so every now and then I take the old washbourn out and rock the fuck out with it.Dont listen to that "bass is boring" crap, BASS ROCKS!

I love playing bass (I'm a guitarist, but I do play bass sometimes).. but you need to stay focus - sometimes, you may be bored playing the bass alone. Try to use some midis or even albuns to follow with your bass.

Do you want to know a great bass player? TOMMY STINSON! ok

2 songs i would recommend to beginners at bass are: "Mr. Brightside" by The Killers and "I Want You To Want Me" by Cheap Trick.

Both fun and are good building blocks

I've just invested in my first bass equipment (might start another thread on that subject).  I'm a pretty noobish guitar player already, but I think that will help a bit.  From what I can tell, the bass seems kind of simpler (you have to admit) but it's a totally new technique and I can tell my hands/fingers will gain in beef once I'm used to it  yes

Can any pros out there shed some light on the pick vs fingers issue?  I understand the pick is usually used for more agressive, attacking bass but I would think you can get more dexterity with finger-style?

I would recomend you yo start with some Queen songs, as Mr. Deacon once said that he always followed up the left hand of freddie to play the bass, so that's just an advice Wink. Good luck with the bass  ok
