Erin, IMHO, will always love Axl.  And Axl will, in some respects, always love Erin.  It just that, as with many co-dependant relationships, they just can't actually survive around each other.  Sad, really.

They are older now as one.

As two, if two people can admit to being co dependant and so being dependant of, they can survive and be very happy.

There are things to go past in both their pasts, but if they have survived their pasts, they can actually survive each other..

I believe in love, too. And I consider myself a romantic.  What I don't believe (and thus, I'm not a "hopeless" romantic) is that love conquers all.  I think it's a very powerful force, and it can accomplish great things, but...well...there are things even love can't overcome, without some help, at least.

I think Axl's demons are such that, while able to love, he's very, very hard to live with: IMHO (and it's only based on what we hear...I can't claim I know him personally), he can be damanding, selfish, and seems to have a very short temper (frustration, I think, when people don't pick things up as quickly as he does, or would like them to) at times.  And I think Axl knows it, and it's why he gives off that aura of sadness that seems to surround him.  And that's what makes some of his life all that much more "tragic".  I swear, the guy's story could be a Shakespearian tragedy (and comedy, for that matter, at times). 

And, suspecting all that, you just gotta feel a bit bad for the guy.
