LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- James Doohan, the burly chief engineer of the Starship Enterprise in the original "Star Trek" TV series and motion pictures who responded to the apocryphal command "Beam me up, Scotty," died early Wednesday. He was 85.

Doohan died at 5:30 a.m. (1330 GMT) at his Redmond, Washington, home with his wife of 28 years, Wende, at his side, Los Angeles agent and longtime friend Steve Stevens said. The cause of death was pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease, he said.

He's a fuckin' legend, shame he's had to go. One of the most memorable characters the screen has offered.

RIP Scotty

I remember back when I was 13 and a huge Star Trek fan, I went to a Star Trek convention and saw James Doohan there.  They also had Walter Koenig, the guy who played Chekov, and the contrast between the two could not be greater.  Koenig acted really bored while he was answering questions and just gave the general impression that he did not want to be there.  Doohan, on the other hand, was cheerful, friendly and funny, and looked like he was pleased to be there.  I remember he even sang a song that he learned as a kid growing up in Canada - much to the delight of the audience.  He was great.

RIP Jimmy.

He's not dead! He's stuck in that transporter buffer on the Dyson Sphere... Roll Eyes

But no, best engineer EVER. He'll be missed.

EDIT - make that the transporter buffer of a shuttlecraft that had crashed on the outer surface of a Dyson Sphere.
