I have a Marshall JCM 2000 DSL head and 1960A cabinet.  For a while I've been noticing strange feedback noise whenever I crank the volume.  This usually happens when I turn the ultra lead volume up past 2 or 3.  It's a loud, steady squeal or whine and sounds different from normal feedback caused by the guitar.  I'm 99% certain something's wrong with the amp, but I was wondering if any of you have any ideas before I open it up.

may be the guitar pickups. wich guitar is it? if it's a cheap guitar or an epiphone it's problaby the pickups. bad guitar pickups will squeal like a dog in heat when the volume or gain is cranked up.
u can always get a noise gate. but if it's because of the guitar change the PU's for Dimarzio, Seymour Duncan or EMG. these 3 usually rock. my fav are Di Marzio and EMG for heavier sounds like Zakk Wylde.

Nah, I'm certain it's not the guitar.  It's a Gibson Les Paul Studio, and even though I should replace the pickups soon I'm sure it's not that.  It's not your normal feedback you get from the guitar, it's definitely something in the amp.  It's just a loud, unchanging, high-pitched whine.

I had a marshall who got broken because of anormal voltage values... the volume pot started makin UGLY noise  Undecided

You could have a bad cable. Simple but worth checking.  Maybe the amp isn't grounded properly.  How close is the amp to other electical appliances?
