I talked to one of my friends this morning, who isnt much of a GNR fan, and he told me that he heard on some music channel that Waylon Jennings son had auditioned for GNR. He didnt remember what channel he heard it on. I checked MTV's web site and there was no mention of it. The guy wwouldn't lie to me, so he definitely heard it somewhere. Does Fuse or some other music channel have some sort of a news/gossip show? This is interesting. Not someone we thought Axl might choose to fill the vacant slot. Has anyone heard this Jennings dude play?

There is no real news show on Fuse that would have that info.  Only on the live show daily download show, which is like Fuse's version of TRL.  They might mention it on that but it would have to be big news for that to happen.  I have asked the people I work with to keep an eye out. ok  BTW, I work in TV broadcast and Fuse broadcasts from my building  Smiley

DTJ, thats cool. I bet that's an interesting job. I just realized that he might have heard this info on a country music station, because his wife is a big country music fan. But its hard to believe that a country station would pick up on it, and no one else would. Have you heard of Waylon Jennings son? I wonder why Axl would consider a country musician who's only claim to fame is the fact that he's Waylon's son? Maybe he's a kick ass guitar player, but I dont know. I've never heard any of his material.

Thanks Kanga. But this article only mentions him doing a few GNR concerts. Which concerts? The article also fails to mention an audition. GNR haven't toured in 3 years, so I dont see why this guy auditioning for those concerts would be news, unless it was an audition for the vacant slot. Maybe some reporter will ask him about it. With GNR being thrown into the mix, he'll get asked about it eventually.

I was assuming that some radio station perhaps picked up on this article and embelished the story.  Mind you, it sounds like this article could be somewhat embelished. I've never heard of any other connection between the two.

Yeah, maybe you're right. I had never heard a connection between the two. I would like to know what concerts he supposedly played at. Actually, I dont think he heard it on a radio station, it was a music video channel. Has this guy ever been mentioned in the same breath as Axl before this article and TV mention?

Youngunner, thats what I thought. I had never heard of the guy until now. Maybe this internet article took it out of context. Maybe they heard the same thing my friend did, and they assumed that because he auditioned for the band, it had something to do with past concerts. Clearly it didnt. The only logical explanation is that he auditioned for the vacant slot. Is there any fans of Jennings on this forum who might could get some more information?

Isn't Waylon Jennings the guy who sang the theme song to the Dukes Of Hazzard tv show?

DTJ, thats him. Thats about the only song from him that I know. I never was a big country music fan. Someone should post a pic of 'Shooter' Jennings, so we can see if he fits into the GNR mold.

I am not a fan either but someone over at Fuse told me that when I was asking questions about his son and the whole audition thing.

From what I know, Shooter Jennings played some shows with his band supporting Duff's band Loaded and he got up and sang some songs with Duff and Slash joined them as well. They played It's  So Easy and Paradise City. There's videos available of these performances, can't remember where I got them from, maybe www.slashonline.com

Anyway, the band sounded great, but his singing left allot to be desired.

Waylon jennings is a god amongst men. He helped create the country genre of music known as "outlaw" with Willie Nelson.

He honestly rules.

This should clear things up a bit.

"DMG: In your bio it says that you subbed for Axl Rose in Guns N? Roses? If that was recently, that wouldn?t leave any original members, would it?

SJ: Well, it?s like this: I had my old band, Stargunn, which was a rock band, like Lynyrd Skynyrd and Guns N? Roses mixed or something. Not as good, but it was that kind of vibe. We were doing a show with Duff and they said, ?Hey, we?re going to do a surprise gig at this thing?, but they did some shows with Josh Todd of Buckcherry and some other different people because they were looking for a singer. I did one show with them and then another at Sundance, which was just crazy. Since I lived in LA, I thought Guns N? Roses was the blueprint for what I thought was cool about LA. I just went there hoping to find that, so it was weird to be in that position.

DMG: So I suppose it wasn?t Guns N? Roses so much as what was to be Velvet Revolver before Scott Weiland?

SJ: It was all the dudes from Velvet Revolver: Dave Kushner, Slash, Duff, and Matt Sorum. You know, the bio said that [subbed for GNR] and I?m always like, ?I didn?t sub. Axl wasn?t there and he?s Guns N? Roses!? You know, Chinese Democracy will never come out. I went and saw that first show they did in Vegas at Mandalay Bay on New Years in 2001. He was four hours late going on, but he played all of Appetite For Destruction, which sounded great. Not as great as the real deal, though."

sic, is this a new interview? Because my friend heard about it yesterday. And what he heard wasn't about VR, it was about GNR. If this interview is old, its not relevant to this new info, although it would be hard to believe that Axl would audition someone who played with VR. But stranger things have happened. Maybe the guy who mentioned this on the music channel misinterpreted the story. Who knows. I just thought I'd pass the info along.

I think it's fairly new.

Also note that Jennings' stint with (pre-Weiland) VR is always mentioned as 'standing in for Axl', etc. They keep connecting him to the GNR name a bit misleadingly. It would make sense, if you say your friend might've heard on a country channel. They might not know a lot of what's going on with GNR/VR, and the story got out of hand.

Personally, I'd say Shooter Jennings has nothing to do with NuGNR.

sic, you make a valid point. But it brings up an interesting question in relation to the linking of Shooter/VR/GNR. Considering the fact that VR has been in the press and has been more popular over the past couple years than GNR, why not just link Shooter to VR? It would make the story that much more credible. There's no need to unnecessarily link him to GNR to get attention, unless there's something there. The way I see it, Shooter more than likely isnt in GNR. Maybe Axl has auditioned alot of people for the vacant slot, and Shooter just happened to be one of those people. Since he also played with VR pre-Weiland, it caused the story to get mingled around.
