Axl/GNR Legacy?

If CD never sees the light of day and GNR ended with the history that we are all aware of, what is their legacy?  Will they be remembered?  Hall of Fame credintials?  Or will it all come down to could've, would've, should've? 


Personal opinion, if CD never comes out, Axl will be forgotten and a small side note in the history of rock.  Great talent but it's not like they re-invented the wheel or anything.

BUT thier true fans will never forget them, and i think that thier previous albums will keep selling after all they are LEGENDS.
hopefully this chinese democracy will come out soon... i feel sorry for the people that have been waiting for like 8 years!!

GNR was cemented as Legends/HOF material the day they dropped AFD on the world. AFD era Guns had it all in spades. The band name, the member names, the image, & 3 of the most dominant hard rock songs ever written to ago along with a slew of other songs that would've been most bands best song. Then u throw in the perfect EP in Lies & u have American rock n' roll perfected. They really were amazing.

It'll be interesting to see if anyone ever can put it all together like GNR did back in the late 80's, cause no one has come close since.

Chinese Democracy and the release or non release of it will have almost no impact on GnR's Hall of Fame Credentials. When the 25th anniversary of Appetite for Destruction Rolls around they will either make it on the resume of the old band or not at all. I have a feeling that the Music Industry in general will look on this new album and the new incarnation of Guns N' Roses as what it truely is, a solo project by a member of Guns N' Roses.

So I don't think that Chinese Democracy will hurt or help their legacy any more that "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere" or "Believe in Me"

After all Jefferson Starship never tarnished the image of Jefferson Airplane. After all I've always considered the new lineup to be "Guns Starship" anyway

Will the strength of one great album (AFD) and a 5 year run be enough for the HOF?  Most of the bands in the HOF have a hell of a lot bigger resume than GNR.  Don't get me wrong, I love GNR, I just think that it is a shame that Axl has tarnished their legacy.

Yes, but legally or otherwise, it remains his to tarnish.

I think on the strength of AFD alone, GnR will forever be talked about, analyzed, cherished, etc. The album was a phenomenon that only continues to grow and still to this very day sounds as agressive and ballz to the wallz as it was when i first listened to it long ago.

The Illusions and the correlation to GnR's legacy will be hit or miss i predict. Any music fan has said they were everything GnR never should have been or were just overproduced/overbloated epics and filler, or simply shortsighted followups to Appetite. I agree to a certain extent as partaining to UYI 1..it still hasnt grown on me in its entirety yet, but UYI 2 is bloody brilliant.

As for Chinese Democracy, if its a brilliant album as we all anticipate it being it will only help redefine GnR's legacy, but even if its never heard from again..I see alot of us checking in to a mental institution

I think the HOF is a good possibility for GN'R.  There are very few if any bands that have had the impact of GN'R afetr releasing so little material.  Also is the band hasn't reunited before they are eligible for the rock n' roll HOF, and the HOF thinks they can get them to reunite for the induction ceremony they'd be a definite.  Imagine a reunion performance by the original band on TV during a HOF induction ceremony.  The only thing cooler would be if they reunited and played a show right now in my backyard.

I think that GNR has a great shot for the HOF.  AFD had a tremendous impact as did GNR and AFD still sells today.  Even if just on AFD merit, I think they will totally be inducted, they took the world by storm.   

As far as Chinese D. if it isn't a success,  No, I don't think it will tarnish old GNR's legacy, I think Axl unfortunately will take the slack for that.  If it's a success, I don't think it will be tacked on the legacy of old GNR, I think it will stand on it's own with the new band.  Just my opinion.

In a perfect world, they are a lock.  They sold 80 millions records worldwide and were a phenomenon for a 3 or 4 year period. 

However, the RnR hall of fame doesn't live in the real world.  The fact that Black Sabbath is not inducted is a joke and taints the whole organization.  So in all reality, I don't think anyone associated with GnR should give a rats a$$ about the RnR hall of fame if they aren't going to recognize someone as obvious as Black Sabbath.

Guns n roses have always been underrated. Its atrocious that a shit band like nirvana gets so vastly overrated because cobain offed himself but gnr one of the biggest bands since the beatles in the 90s are underrated.

I don't think GNR has ever been underrated by any stretch of the imagination, their place in rock history is solid.

That being understood they will never have the same type legacy some bands
garner merely due to timing and the changes in music and popular culture that occured in late 1991 in the US.

Yeah, the rock n' roll HOF is a joke.  So much politics go into the selections its a friggin' travesty.  Sabbath is the most glaring omission, but there are plenty others.
