Why does music and religion beliefs have to be mixed together?

I'm having this problem with the bands I listen to and my family. Some of my family seems to hate like Heavy Metal because they are straight-up church goers. All the people I know who aren't metalheads strongly believe if you listen to metal, your a devil-worshipper or the anti-christ but I mostly listen to metal because of the guitar playing, I like the singing but I don't care for the lyrics. Some of the metalheads always bash christians when I was raised from a christian family, but not all of my relatives were mean , some I am really close to . So what the fuck is this telling me, I have to chose a side? I feel I am in a Darth Vader/Annikan Skywalker situation.

man, religion and music should never be mixed...? because music is so strong to influence anything...? it doesnt really matter what you listen to, in order to believe in something...

my family is pure and deeply catholic and they dont mind the heavy metal i listen to, mainly because my dad listens to the same stuff. and the whole metalhead = satan worshiper is a sterotype, let them think what they want.

Almost all Christian metal is terrible. Satanic (which can mean anything, though) bands of quality outnumber Christian bands by about 10:1, if not more. Dave Mustaine hasn't written anything really good ever since he became a Christian, either.
Metal-Archives.com has 8160 black metal bands (of which maybe 200 are good, though
) A search for "christian" lyrical themes revealed 1143 matches, of which 90% were "anti-christian".
In fact, the only Christian band I can think of that has ever been decent is Trouble. All this, despite Christianity being the religion of choice in the West.
It wouldn't seem reasonable to admit Christians are incabable of making good music, but things don't look so good for the Christian metal scene, if even one exists. Stryper didn't help at all, either.

not all music is about death and stuff. That would be a very stupid reason for basing a anti metal oppinion.

there are many different types of christians ! you get the old style that dont like loud up beat christian music ( dont like drums and guitar just the organ)
you get the tight arses that that think every song should be a hym ( spelling not great)
then you get the up- beat lets rock and roll christians that love the guitar , drums loud music.
some christians have different morals ( like us )
some may say death metal could very well be named "devil Music "
you can hardly understand the wording ( if you are older ) and yes it does sound evil to them and somtimes even to me. depending on the music "metallica" on the other hand is not so bad, hardly any swearing and it is still up-beat and tollerated by MOST christians.
most christians are not pushy and will not perswade you to go to church or listen to christian music if you dont want to so no you dont have to pick a side. BUT at the same time Mike you have to respect thier wishes. if they dont want you to blast death/ hevey metal out of your bedroom then dont do it ( do it when they go shopping ). that way it will make your family allot easier to live with. make sure you respect what they want as it is thier house not your own!

Not all rap is about gangsterism and stuff. That would be a very stupid reason for basing an anti-rap opinion. yet metalheads do it, myself included. so does the hip-hop community. let them be as they will, everybody has thier own tastes.

First of all Walk, I didn't say there should or shouldn't be Metal for christians, I don't even care . I fucking hate Stryper, Dave Mustaine still rocks, didn't you hear the new album yet? Its heavy as shit, blackmail the universe, die dead enough, kick the chair , those songs kick ass. Some fans are posers and just fucking stupid. They don't chose their favorite bands because it sounds good to them , cuz they believe in the same thing
I saw Slayer in concert because I love Slayer's guitar playing and heavy-ness, I don't care that they sing about evil stuff. What I exactly meant was its fucking stupid to treat your taste in music like a religion or an ethnic group . Instead of wasting time in my life worshipping bands, I practice and play guitar because I'm a leader , not a follower.

No Gunna_Girl, you didn't say the wrong thing , I did ,well explained it dumb. Band-worshippers tell their friends that listen to the same thing they can't do certain things in order to be a true fan. All right , for example I had a dumb friend before , he acted exactly the way bands wrote their lyrics, he thought just because he listened to metal he had to be the anti-christian and act evil . The reason I started this thread was to ask people do u really have to turn on your family and change your beliefs just because of the music you listen to and what friends you hang out with in that crowd ? Forgive me Gunna_Girl, I said dumb things , it's awesome to have rock n' roll as your religion if thats the way u thought I meant it.

I to was brought up in a catholic household. It's hard, but I got through. Just don't throw it up in thier face is all, keep your cd's in order and tidy, not everything just the cd's, basically, out of site out of mind, kind of approach, listen to the music in headphones instead of blaring out loud (especially the more evil sounding songs
) for instance if you are playing Megadeth's Youthanasia, A Toute Le Monde is ok to play out loud but Family Tree or Adicted to chaos should stay in the head phones, maybe when they hear songs that are more "radio freindly" then they say "this song ain't so bad who is it?"
Years later my dad likes to hear the odd GnR tune or Metallica tune and actually sings the words to them
Kinda funny for a middle age church goer no?
Descretion is the key, that's my advice.
Oh yeah when they are in a good mood I could play more. in a bad mood? I played heavy stuff way less

I think music and religion are two totally separate issues. I go to church every Sunday...and I'm a metalhead. I think Christian rock/metal sucks. I listen to Anthrax, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, and bands like that all the time. Firstly, none of those bands are devil worshiping bands. Its been mentioned before, Dave Mustaine is a pretty devout Christian. Scott Ian of Anthrax is Jewish. Even the guys in Maiden, who for some reason always get labeled as satanists, are totally normal dudes who do not worship the devil in any way. To me the two things are completely separate. I can go to church and stuff like that, but I can also sing along to The Number Of The Beast. Even the guys in Slayer, one of the most notoriously "evil" bands of all time, are normal dudes. Tom Araya (bassist/vocalist) of Slayer is a Christian...he's the friggin' singer of Slayer and he's a Christian. If that's not proof that music and religion don't always go together I don't know what is.

Wow that's cool dude, I shouldn't be insecure after all. Remember I didn't say my family hates my music, I just thought they did. After all this time , relatives still don't complain yet for the music I listen to, so fuck these stereo-types I hear . Thanks for that comment dude

Right on, man. Unfortunately there probably will always be stereotypes and misconceptions regarding us metalheads. Not much we can do about it except be ourselves and show those who come up with the stereotypes that they're wrong.

there are far too many stereo types associated with music
rock n roll should be dangerous, loose, on the edge, raunchy with a bad attitude
