London was picked up to be the host of Olympic Games 2012 in a final rivalry with Paris.

The news came after a two-way battle between five final contestants.

Earlier on Wednesday the International Olympic Committee eliminated bids from Moscow, New York and Madrid.

IOC president Jacques Rogge made the dramatic announcement at 1249 BST.

Tension filled the air as crowds gathered in both capital cities to await the verdict - outside the Hotel de Ville in Paris, and at a pre-planned 'party' in Trafalgar Square respectively, BBC reported.

Wednesday's decision brings to an end the 18-month race to win the host contract for the 2012 Games.

Sucks that Madrid didn't get it. I thought we had a shot.

I turned on, literally, seconds before it was announced, because I got up so damn late.

I couldn't believe it.

Being such a patrioic country, it's great that we got it.

I didn't react like I would if we'd just got the World Cup, but I was still really, really happy.

I have absolutely?no interest in the Olympics, but it has the promise to regenerate run-down areas of London - so i'm pleased for that.

As well as British sport as a whole.

Even if you're not a great fan of the Olympics (which I'll admit baffles me), it's great for any fan of sport.

AdZ and myself were actually at Trafalgar Square just before and after they announced it. When we were leaving, fighter jets flew over the place......

Lots of happy people and confetti all over the place.

Congrats to London!

That's not very nice... Roll Eyes
It shouldn't be political, it's sport, it's different. I can understand that politically you find France foreign policy is Zero (and I agree with that), but is it what the OG are about? it's sport, not politic.
