WWW
« on: June 29, 2005, 02:21:45 AM »

Im somewhat superstitious, If i have 13 dollars Ill buy a water or a coke or something so Ill have 12.

If i finish a football video game and my player has 666 yards Ill play another game and wont leave his stats on that no matter how tired I am.

Me and my GF were workin on a song that deals with sins and religion and while I was playing guitar and singing it the fuckin bed broke.

I cant get her to help me write it as she took that as a sign cause the next day I also lost my car keys.

strange shit

whats some superstitions u have?

I try not to !  Grin
I used to have a brasilian tissue bracelet around my ankle until recently. It's a kind of luck and protection thing ... I took it off when someone told me I didn't need this to confront the world that I was strong enough to be able to do it without it.
It's kinda strange I miss it not because of the luck side of the thing but because it was somewhat a link to who I am and where I come from.  Tongue

Please ... don't you think you're acting a little like a drama queen lately ? We are in the jungle ! Is this section only to be devoted to politics ? Iraq war ? Jarmo must have forgotten to point that to us or maybe I misread the rules or something ?

I don't know if you find the thread so pointless why do you feel the need to open it, read it and answer ? The title was obvious.

So scores of threads on this same topic is okay? - i'd have thought using the TWO started last week would have been okay, but hell if u think we need to rehash what was said LAST WEEK then cool

Because i find it hilariously funny - and if u'd takent he time to read what i said, i was searching for a person who was superstitious and NOT mad - research

And,

A thread asking 'are u superstitious' seems open to those who wish to write 'no', surely?

What does my number of posts have to do with you over-reacting about what's this board is becoming ? And what do you don't like in what I usually post ? If I acted like a drama queen please tell me when it was ? Iraq ? Affirmative action ? maybe China ? You're right these are the perfect drama queen's threads !

Scoring threads ? You entered here and brought back the topic here ! I didn't. The thread was about superstition remember ? Check out my first answer it matches the topic.

U listed them yourself, check any of those for examples

Anyway, on topic

No, i'm not superstitious - maybe its the fact i went to school and have an education behind me, have a basic grasp on how things work and don't blindly accept what i'm told.

Doesn't being superstitious seem a little primitive in todays modern world?

Do u really believe that 'A' u got for ur last exam was ur lucky skull's work or perhaps the fact ud revised?

Superstition is people afriad and insecure seeking answers. I seek answers to - but i read what scientists and doctors think happened, u know this 'science' thing - they might actual have something!

By the way a crazed spirit told me to write this, and in my wardrobe is the gateway to Narnia.

On a side note, in many tribes in Africa hearing voices is associated with being in contact with spirits. In the west its called Schizophrenia. Which one to do u think is right - spirits or a Neurological disorder?

Oh dear - the quote button didn't work for u - the ghosts got it!

It's been settled even before I read your answer and that's a relief ... The ghost joke was actually funny too bad I don't believe in them.

Really ? What makes my answer to these threads so drama-queenesque ? Please enlight me ! I'm so not the drama queen type in real life that if it looks like I'm being one on the net I need to actually change something about what I write.

Back on topic too. You're actually having this conversation with someone rather cartesian. That's part of my french upbringing... you know Descartes etc etc ... I don't believe in bad luck ... the ladder stuff or the number 13 ... a black cat ... it doesn't make sense to me.
But I was born and raised in Brazil and even if I don't believe in these things I do respect those that do. And education and superstition have nothing to do. My father used to be a lawyer and a university teacher he's not mad because he wears a piece of tissue around his wrist or because he pours salt behind a door ... it's not only about superstition it's also about culture.

U don't say....?

Pray tell - what does salt behind the door do?

Okay, perhaps u can answer me on this

At what point does a 'superstious' practice become the actions of a disturbed individual?

For instance

Would cutting a crucifix into ur skin be an understandable way of warding off evil or is it madness?
If someone wouldn't leave their house (even to go to work) on Friday 13th - is that not a reflection on the mental state of the person?
Is basing ur life around superstion a 'normal' activity?

I see ANY action taken due to superstition as highly irrational. If someone views it as okay - when does it cease to be?

I know you're going to laugh your ass off with this one but hell ... ?Grin
Salt behind doors prevent bad spirits entering the house ... ?yes rofl But as I said previously it's not that he believes bad spirits are wandering everywhere. My father began doing it when his mother died ... she believed in that kind of stuff ... so I think it's rather a way to keep his memories of her alive ... ?

I think as long as your superstitions don't overtake your life there's nothing to be afraid of ... D's examples are ok with me (his explanations of why it happened doesn't convince me at all though ?Grin). When you're not free to live your life as you want to ... there's a problem and you actually need a shrink ! ?Wink

You're right we're not ! I guess it's boredom ... Sometimes people need to vent because of their jobs or life in general and come here to find a thread to post in ... and as there's nothing to be said on the gnr section we end up discussing the existence of ghosts in the jungle ! ?Grin Wink

after you dont walk under a ladder once, and nothing bad happens to you...the brain associates itself the action with the result, a neuron link...if you do the same thing again, the brain's neuron gets a stronger link, the stronger the link the more you believe it to be true...its got nothing to do with spirituality, its the brains structure and chemistry that enables you to believe in superstition

thats why the brain can be brainwashed into thinking something that isnt really true...ie by repetition and disassociation you can lose your sense of reality...

Careful now - we won't have any rational answers in this thread, go re-write that but include the words 'scary', 'spirit', 'when i was 8' and 'prove its not so' - then u will have a truly mindless post that won't seem out of place
