Everyone so far has been a poseur here. Here's the REAL good death metal!
Devourment
Gorguts
Nile
Cannibal Corpse
Death
Cynic
Atheist
Possessed
Suffocation
Entombed
Kataklysm
Ok, now here's some good black metal. There IS a difference between death and black.
Burzum
Darkthrone
Bathory
Emperor
Immortal
Xasthur
Vlad Tepes
Finntroll
Anaal Nathrakh
Ignore Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, Metallica, and others. They aren't black or death metal at all.
oh...any of these bands is a good start for gunner girl.

www.metal-archives.com
Go here and put in the name of whatever band sounds cool to you. Read reviews and pick the good albums. Also, ask the forum there, as they're more knowledgable of black and death metal than I am.
Burzum's debut album (self-titled) is a good start to black metal, and Death's Leprosy album is a good start to death metal. They are my personal favorites of the genres.

Ignore Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, Metallica, and others. They aren't black or death metal at all.
Ignore anyone who still uses the term "Poseur"
I never labeled them them as black or death metal. I could give two shits about what label people have to assign to music. I just stated who I like.
Gunna_girl: I would recommend "Death Cult Armageddon". If you have an MSN Messenger account, I could let you hear a few songs so you dont waste any money on it if its not your taste.

Capital punishment is a greatest hits.
Countdown to Extinction is from the same time as Metallica's Black Album. It's pretty good to a little less radio freindly than Black Album but I think it's a good place to start.

Rust in Piece is Megadeth's best album, just get it and everything before it. But Megadeth is thrash metal, and really not that dark. Sodom and Kreator are good if you like some evil thrash.
Yeah, Finntroll is great.

Gunna_Girl, forget about all this death metal shit that no one's heard of. If you want to hear an album when you feel demonic or want to kill someone, I HIGHLY recommend Slayer's 'Seasons in the Abyss'. Its one of the best albums of the 90's. Go buy it immediately. You'll thank me for turning you on to it.
