Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS - Karl Mueller, a founding member of the Twin Cities rock band Soul Asylum, died Friday, friends and music associates said. He was 41 and suffered from throat cancer.

Mueller played the bass guitar for Soul Asylum - one of the Twin Cities most popular and successful rock bands - which he co-founded in 1984 with friends Dave Pirner and Dan Murphy.

The band enjoyed several years of underground and critical success but was best known for its multi-platinum 1992 release "Grave Dancers' Union" and the hit "Runaway Train."

Mueller was diagnosed with cancer in May 2004 and underwent radiation treatment.

"We had all hoped he'd come through the worst," said Maggie Macpherson, a friend of Mueller's and a longtime worker in the Twin Cities music scene. "We knew his time would be shorter than hoped ... but he was due for surgery on Monday."

The cancer was in remission in October when a legion of Twin Cities music scene veterans banded together for a "Rock for Karl" benefit concert at the Quest to help defray Mueller's medical costs.

The event featured a lineup of 1980s and '90s Twin Cities rock luminaries, including Paul Westerberg of the Replacements, Bob Mould and Grant Hart of Husker Du, and the Gear Daddies. Soul Asylum also performed, with Mueller participating in a full set of music.

Mueller is survived by his mother, Mary, and his wife, Mary Beth.

RIP. I really loved that band actually the whole Minneapolis scene , Soul Asylum, The Jayhawks, Wilco , Uncle Tupelo etc, those are some of my all time favorite bands. Listening to Grave Dancers Union always brings back great memories of the early 90's. I hope they get a deal and release the stuff they had recorded the past year. Anyone who hasn't heard any of Soul Asylum's stuff , The Jayhawks for that matter give them a few spins, great music.
