This I love question
«
on:
May 11, 2005, 08:02:10 AM »
I wanted to ask is there any truth to the fact that axl called this his heaviest song he has written during an interview in the earlier 90''s, and if so if it's like 12-13 years old has anyone from the old lineup worked on any of it??\
If it didn't happen then just lock this.. thanks

I don't know about
truth
, but I read several stories in a few rock magazines around the time of the release of TSI and after (1993-1994) that Axl was quoted as saying that he'd written and recorded (on his own I assume) This I Love, which was the "heaviest thing he'd ever written". Of course whether or not it was made up remains to be seen.

thanks.. If so do you think he just wrote the song but had no music to it?? Maybe it was his next novemeber rain type song and didn't get anyone else involved, but would have eventually if they stayed together??

Well I can't remember exactly what Axl was quoted as saying, and I don't have any of those magazines unfortunately, but I think it was implied as "heavy" as in an emotional sense like Estranged and November Rain are. And there was no mention of whether the rest of the band had worked on it.
Nevertheless, it'll be interesting to see if it turns up in some form or another, if even at all.

i don`t think it`ll appear on chinese democracy since it`s to old and was written at the time of the old band, but we`ll see (hopefully). It should appear on a soundtrack of some movie around 2000 i think, but the director or someone didn`t like it. Someone who worked in the film crew described it as a simple piano track(only piano?).

Is anyone still looking forward to this song being on CD? After reading various threads at several different forums, I'm not too enthused about it. Although I haven't heard it, I hope it doesn't make the final cut. When you consider the fact that the song was rejected for a lame movie soundtrack, it must not have much potential. Wouldn't the Producer/Director have wanted basically any new GNR song to bring attention to their movie? But they flat out rejected it! Think about it! Oh My God was put on a soundtrack, yet this song couldn't make it on to one. Do you really think this song has an epic "earth shattering" capability knowing its a soundtrack reject?

Clintron, you do have a point. But putting ANY Guns song on the soundtrack would have given the film major publicity. Droves of people would have watched the film and bought the soundtrack just for this one song. Considering that it was rejected for a crappy film, I do NOT have high hopes for this song. If Axl's "mindblowing" epic is a low grade Robin Williams film reject, I can see why years are being spent doing "finishing touches".

I'm sure if you look back then there will be scores of songs that were rejected by films that became huge hits. Just because this i love wasn't on the film doesnt mean anything whatsoever.

The Music Supervisor who put the soundtrack together included it on the soundtrack when she submitted it to the Director (Vincent Ward - I think). The director rejected it and the Music Supervisor (Dawn Soler) was very unhappy with him claiming that he just "didn't get it".
The song was rejected by a producer rather than someone who specialises in putting a soundtrack together. Dawn Soler still claims that it was a great track and should have made the soundtrack but that the director was "a pill".

Nice try, but you're probably wrong. Considering that the soundtrack for
What Dreams May Come
is entirely instrumentals, the rejection likely had more to do with the appropriateness of including a rock song (even a November Rain type ballad) rather than the song being of shitty quality. I'll also point out that Wojciech Kilar, one of the most accomplished composers in classical music, wrote the original theme for
What Dreams May Come
but it was rejected for being too dramatic. I guess that must mean his work sucks too, right?
The reality of the situation is that you don't know what you're talking about - no one does except for the people directly involved. It does nothing but open up a can of worms to try and speculate. Lose your illusions.....

Believe it or not these things are not usually publicized.
Do you actually doubt that this has happened?

2NaFish, I know a shitload of songs have been rejected for movies. Its only logical. I'm questioning your statement about those rejects becoming hits. I've tried thinking of one but I cant. So please tell me at least one of these 'film reject turned into radio hits'.

Not everyone makes a film for it to be huge. Some people just make films that are nice and flow evenly. If the song didn't fit the film, it obviously shouldn't have gone on just to attract hype.
It's called artistic integrity.

You got me. Off of the top of my head i can not name one song that was rejected for a movie and then went on to be a huge hit.
However, there are several artists who regularly put work forward for movies (the bee gees, queen etc). I'm absolutely certain they will have had songs turned down, which then went on to be hits. Not due to them being poor songs but because they didnt fit. The simple fact is we don't often find out what songs have been rejected from what movie.
Anyway, your point was that since it was turned down for a film it was going to be crap. Which is simply not true in any way whatsoever.
