Small teabags are given unlimited power. They can even decide to go to war if needed.

Sounds like quite a risky idea then. We could all end up in very hot water...

Grin I sat in front of the monitor for a good two minutes, thinking that one up

Unfortunately though, I don't think I'm quite with you on the Alcoholics Anonymous joke, which is making sure I'm humbled enough to stop gloating about my own joke? Tongue Were you saying AA is ruled by coffee, because that's the best they can get without getting onto the drink again, or...something?

By the way, I think he meant 'Theocracies'

Yea, AA meetings are like a starbucks (everybody drinking coffee), hence my 'joke'.

(I spent less than one minute on that one!)

Ah ok. I've never been to one, so I wouldn't really know  Tongue

I think I'm gonna leave this and go to bed now, so people can have serious conversations about theocracy, if they wish. Sounds far too deep for me to be thinking about at 3:30am, so I'm off. If I think of a good joke, I'll get out of bed and post it  ok

Plain and simple, theocracies are so loathed because they're basically absolute power in the hands of one person.  The ruler can do any injustice, claiming it's what the gods told him to do.

Absolute power is bad enough, but "divinely-guided" absolute power is just asking for disaster.

Yeah, it does sound stupid to me. I don't particularly like the idea of religious leaders at all. Some denominations are really keen on the idea of bowing to leadership etc - I think the charismatic church is one of them - and in a way I can see where they're coming from, but not much. It's bad enough and corrupt enough within their own individual organisations, so I can't imagine how bad it would be if it was the way a whole country worked. It just sounds like a dictatorship, and I would fully expect some corrupt and/or deluded liar to be the one who took charge. He could do anything, then say 'Hey stop complaining! God told me to do it!!', and the orthodox Christians - I'm obviously speaking from a Western perspective - would go 'Oh...um...ok', because they're too scared to question the widely accepted interpretations of The Bible.

Hebrews 13:17

Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for this would be unprofitable for you.

...But what if one day you're told to do something, and you feel it's absolute bullshit? The Bible also teaches about false prophets etc., and warns against them, so a Theocracy would just make ample opportunity for those kinda people, eager to play on the blind acceptance and obedience to those 'above' them, because they trust that it's all going to be divinely inspired. I have the same problem with the idea of children obeying their parents. The Bible says obey them 'in the Lord', which to me means that you should obey them up to the point where their directions and advice become too tainted by their human sin and corruption. I'd apply the same logic to religious leaders, but the legal system wouldn't; it would just become even more wicked and debauched.
