In Sunday school we used have an exercise called, "Your Five Values". We'd list our five spiritual values, and our five material values. The teacher would ask why we valued those particular things. It was supposed to be a self-discovery technique.

What are your top five values?

Sunday School is such a load of crap, a lot of the time. It's often just patronising indoctrination, in an environment created largely because the church leaders and congregations in general have very low tolerance and acceptance levels when it comes to kids... but that's another issue, so... moving on...

1a. The ability and freedom to love people

Nobody can ever take that away from you, however much any individual may wish to hate you, betray you, or just basically make you feel bad. Sure, that often makes it harderto love them, but it's never impossible, and in my life I've found it's definitely worth trying to love everyone.

1b. The love other people give in return

I don't really need to explain how precious this is? Smiley Love really is all that matters, because it breeds many other positive things. If everyone loved each other...well, it's never gonna happen, so I won't fantasise, but you all know how much better the world would be.

2. Forgiveness

I think one of the best ways of learning forgiveness is experiencing how painful it can be when somebody doesn't forgive you for something you may have done. It does fucking hurt, and although experiencing it isn't necessarily going to make someone want to spare everyone else the pain, it at least gives people a heightened sense of empathy, which will hopefully make them realise how beneficial it is to forgive. Not because a person has 'earned' forgiveness, and not even on the condition that they say sorry...but do it unconditionally and completely. Ain't easy though. I've been fighting for the last 8 months or so to fully forgive my ex for the way her selfishness caused her to treat me, and I don't plan on giving up until I feel deep down that I'm cleansed of all the bitterness I feel towards her, because it's holding me back and I want to remove any guilt she may still feel.

3. Tolerance and mutual respect

I see so many people getting so worked up and often offensive, over such small and trivial issues and differences. If I also saw that consistent progress was being made as a result of all the shouting and screaming, then perhaps my views would change, but I don't. If people weren't so protective and fearful of their own belief system and culture being challenged, we'd make much more progress, and there would be less conflict in the world. Rationality seems to go out of the window as soon as a person get's angry and forceful/aggressive about something. Pride, arrogance and bigotry come into play, and it all becomes a vicious circle, so when I see someone who has the humility to just...let it go, I really admire them.

4. Recognition of your own faults and shortcomings

This is another thing that could prevent so much unnecessary conflict. If we all had a complete understanding of just how crap we can be sometimes, we'd stop being so arrogant, and so judgmental of others. Personally, I know I spend too much of my time picking faults in people, identifying hypocrisy, making false and grossly unfair assumptions about them, and often choosing to take the path of least resistance by simply avoiding them, as opposed to challenging why I'm being such an idiot. People - myself included - spend so much time ranting about how sick the paedophiles, murderers and rapists are, but who are we to make such judgments when we're so fucked up ourselves? We sit there watching the news, and talk like we know what's going on. It's not a paedophile's fault, for example, that he has those temptations so strongly. The reason most of us aren't paedophiles is that we don't feel those temptations in the first place, but we do all have our own vices and our own temptations, which more often than not we give in to. I'm not saying criminals shouldn't be punished or that their should be no laws, because the lack of trust and love in human society has made such regulations necessary, but there's something hugely unfair and unhelpful about the hatred everyone seems to encourage towards criminals.

5. Honesty/Transparency

I suck at this, a lot of the time. It really is the best way to be though. It's not going to keep you or other people happy 100% of the time, but that doesn't ever mean that things are happening in a way they're not supposed to be. One small lie can snowball and get you into a very sticky situation, where you're gonna hurt people and let them down so...so much more than you would have if you'd just been completely open and see-through from the start, and it's not nice to see people you love feeling so hurt and so betrayed, because of mistakes you've made. It becomes harder and harder to admit you've been living a lie, but eventually it's more than likely to come out by force, whether you want it to or not, so it seems far more logical to be transparent from the very start of everything. I'd also love to be able to rid myself of all my ulterior motives, by letting people know exactly why I'm doing something, but I don't always succeed. I fail and I feel bad about not being as intimate and honest with the person as I would like to be.

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Material possessions...

I don't really have a great deal of material possessions at my disposal, since I moved to live where I do now, 'cause most of the things I like to think of as mine are in my room at my parents' house. I like it this way though, 'cause it's always been a dream of mine to be as unmaterialistic as possible, so this has been a kind of training for me. I don't think I've ever been dependent on many of my material possessions, but I don't honestly feel I would cope too well if I was suddenly stripped of them all. I guess for the purposes of this list, I'll consider everything in the house to be jointly mine, since at the end of the day everything is God's anyway? Tongue so there's a sort of beauty in never claiming anything as being solely yours.

3. TV

Ignorance must be challenged whenever we see it, just letting things go is the reason there are problems in the world to begin with.

If people see something wrong and move to challenge it, things get done, the reason this world is so fucked is because people allow it to be that way

I don't agree that it should be challenged whenever we see it, but...yeah, I'm certainly not going to the opposite extreme either.? There are better, more understanding and open-minded ways of dealing with things though. It doesn't hurt to accept the fact that even your strongest belief might not be completely correct. If you see someone displaying what you view as ignorance over a certain issue, then...ok, challenge it, but it's only fair if you're prepared to have what you believe challenged in return, and prepared to consider that they might just have a valid point. I've got myself in hot water in the past, because I've been too firmly routed in my own beliefs, and too unwilling to give any ground.

People see things that they feel are 'wrong' all the time, and move to take action against it, but the success rate doesn't seem to be high enough, and surely the subjectiveness of what is considered right and wrong in the first place hints at the possibility that a mistake may have been made by acting on an issue - Iraq, for example.

Izzy, I think what I'm trying to emphasise is largely that it would be good if we could give others more credibility than we often do, regardless of whether we agree with them, because they are pretty much our equals whether we like it or not. I guess I'm being quite idealistic though, and perhaps losing touch slightly with the reality of the situation.

TJ: Great f'in post!

Great stuff.

As far as material things are concerned, they come and go anyway. No matter how much, how nice, or whatever. I've had nice things flow in and out of my life. I was thankful when I had them, but didn't miss them when they were gone. If you embrace the principles you outlined then material things are just condiments on the side. Just a little extra....but not needed (to be happy).

Indeed - my post most;y applies to things most people can agree on - poverty, crime - these things continue to be rampant because ultimately we allow it - Africa is poor because all of us allow it to be, crimes continue because people don't denounce those that perpetrated them

Silly ideas - rascism, footballers wages, the EU ok - they all continue because we don't challenge it, or don't challenge it enough
