Let's say that Axl issues a statement in August saying that CD will be out in December. And then Geffen/Interscope announces a specific date. Millions of copies of CD are made to be shipped to all the music stores. And then the hype machine starts. But it doesn't go over as well as Axl,Sanctuary, and Geffen would like. There isn't as much interest in GNR as they thought. Here's my question: Could Axl, under the scenario mentioned above, be able to do something to prevent the release of CD? Or would the mass production of CD be the "point of no return"?

If they have made the Cd then its too late

And they wouldn't know what demand would be untill it went on sale either

Izzy, they're gonna know the demand weeks in advance of CD's release. They're gonna know if people are talking about it or not. Internet, radio,tv shows, news shows, magazines, etc. The weeks leading up to its release are going to be very interesting!

CDs can be recalled even after they've been manufactured.

They can even pull them of the shelves after one day or something like that.

Damn, Jarmo, that really happens?? I've heard of albums being pulled off the shelves because of controversial album covers(Jane's Addiction), but the album was put back on the shelves with a new cover. Well, if CD is ever released, I'm definitely buying more than one copy in case something crazy happens.

The AFD banned cover slipped my mind. I have the LP of that sealed. But it got damaged during shipping and is kind of messed up. Probably isn't worth much.

My friends got a never-been-opened copy with "the rape" cover on vinyl.  I couldn't believe we just found that shit at a record store just sitting there.  Vintage Vinyl in Fords, New Jersey...one of the greatest friggin' places on the planet.  Of course they have a picture of the original cover in the booklet if you buy it on CD.

Prince's The Black Album was pulled back in 1988 just days before it's release. Thousands of copies were recalled from the warehouse and destroyed.
Nikka Costa's latest CD was due out last October. Promos were made up, sent to radio and other media outlets for review. Then the record company decided it needed more work, stopped the release and released a totally different version last month. This is actually more common than you think.
Obviously it would be different for GnR, since interest and demand would be very high.

As far as demand for the CD goes, major music retailers determine how much of the product to buy initially based on radio play and the amount of $$ that the label is putting into promoting the CD. One would assume that this will be pushed hard, even if the CD doesn't turn out to be as great as we all expect it to.
