It's better to burn out than to fade away...

« on: May 15, 2005, 03:38:04 PM »

As I embark this summer on my umpteenth attempt to bulk up a little and get more muscular, I've found myself listening to a lot of songs that seem good to work out to.? Most of them tend to be 80s pop/rock tunes, for some reason.? I thought that maybe, in the interests of encouraging fitness among rockers, we should have a thread that suggests good songs to exercise to.? My picks:

Anything from the Rocky movies
"Eye of the Tiger" is the classic, sure, but anything from these movies is great.? The "Redemption" theme to Rocky II is an excellent variation on the theme from the first movie, but there's also cheesy yet catchy 80s pop/rock like John Cafferty's "Hearts on Fire", Robert Tepper's "No Easy Way Out", Vince DiCola's Rocky IV synthesizer pieces "Training Montage" and "War", and James Brown's "Living In America", which just seems like a good song to jog to.? I also heartily recommend this kind of music when studying for exams.

Warrant, "The Power"
Great rabble-rousing song from the soundtrack to a 1992 boxing movie.? Chorus immediately makes you want to start darting around and punching the air.

Cheap Trick, "Mighty Wings"
From the Top Gun soundtrack, this is a bit different from Cheap Trick's usual stuff, but once again it's a great 80s pop/rock anthem that might be cheesy but definitely gets the adrenaline flowing.

Scorpions, "Rock You Like A Hurricane"
Can't go wrong with this one.? It's got that fundamental element of every good workout song: a hard rockin', fist pumping chorus.

Europe, "The Final Countdown"
Say no more.

i must say my favourite is no easy way out from the rocky IV soundtrack. it's played over the best montage in the series (and thats against alot of competition) and always inspires me.

whats the song thats playing in the background when forrest gump goes for a run across america? i like that too.

The problem with "workout songs" is that if you are consistently listening to music while you exercise, all of them eventually lose their fire.

I've learned that the BEST song to workout to is the one you haven't listened to in the longest time.  Sure it has to be uptempo and all that jazz, but if you listen to it everyday, soon it won't give you that extra "rush" that you're looking for.  So the key is to not overplay the songs that actually work for you.

All of "Dookie" is good.

I was thinking of doing this topic the other day!!

I find almost anything of GNR will do the trick, I never get tired of it.

Some metallica, ace of spades, whole lotta rosie, anything fast works for me!!

EASY E is right on the money...We used to listen to ROCKY IV soundtrack almost everyday in wrestling practice in highschool (also DMX, Guns n' Roses, and tribe called quest) and ever since then when i hear a song from that soundtrack it makes me feel sick, tired, exhausted and shitty...just like i was at practice.  Switch your songs up...and drop all that fuckin shitty 80's cheese...give me a break.   You should listen to music that gets you pumped, not something that's on a bunch of movie montages.   I find that whenever i listen to something new, or unfamilar...it pumps me up because I really pay attention to the music and just forget that my body hurts and i'm working out.  So to end my blabbering rant i say, drop that horrible 80's stuff and take EASY E's advice by listening to somehthing new, or something forgotten, to get that sense of exhileration, inside you, not just some music that is designed to be fast and "fist pumping" when you work out.

I don't know, I always like listening to that cheesy 80s stuff when I work out because not only is it fast-paced and stuff, but maybe it's also kind of amusing to me to essentially be aping scenes from Rocky.  I get a laugh and a burst of adrenaline at the same time.  Smiley

That's fucking great then!!  haha go for it man...humor is the spice of life.  I just can't help but associate those songs with, overall, negative feelings since they were listened to at a time of, basically, great physical pain and suffering.  It just reminds me of pushups, sprints, weights, blood and not being able to drink a sip of water, to help my superglue-like cotton-mouth, swallow; because i had to cut 9 pounds for tommorow's tournament.

If by "workout", you mean a girly run on the treadmill, nothing beats ABBA, Villege People, and Ace of Base. If you mean pumping iron to get hy00ge, you need groove metal like Pantera or Fear Factory!  Grin

I'd strongly recommend any Rollins Band album as a great workout soundtrack, End of Silence, Weight, and Come In And Burn being my personal choices.

yeah, you gotta have variety in your workout soundtrack.  My current favorite song to work out to is VH's 'Right Now' - and I always picture the video in my head too.

Mattman, you need to starve yourself of those songs that really get you motivated!  Appetite and Contraband are almost ruined for me because I brought them to the gym so much.

MP3 players are the way to go... that way you can mix up what you listen to daily.

I'm wondering how I ever existed without one.  Has it improved your workout?  I mean, can you workout for longer now that you have the right music to distract you?  I find that it has for me - even more than a CD player because there's so many more songs.   I just time myself by how many songs I listen to, and their duration, rather than look at my watch.  MP3 time goes by much faster than clock time.  Smiley
