Duff shouldve played drums on CW

first post lol, and I have absolutly no idea what is going on w/ this new "language" on the forum did I miss something lol?
Well I just thought of this, and im sure alot of you have read the article about the recording of Civil War back in 1990 and Steven was unable to play. Supposedly they didnt want to waste more money renting the studio , and had to get that song recorded, but Adler was trying to get off heroin and was extremely sick from withdrawl. This was the final straw that broke the camels back and forced the band to kick him out b/c i forget but i think it said it took over 60 takes to get the drums right, and they still werent great. So, if they really cared about sticking together and being a band, wouldnt they think of this scenario?: Duff,(who was a drummer in some of his previous punk bands and who is pretty much an all around musician) played the drum track to CW seperatly (im sure everyone knows that for most songs each part is recorded seperatly like drums, bass etc and then edited together) and then later he lays down the bass lines to. Obviously he couldnt do that for all of the songs on UYI, but if this story was what actually happened(Steven was trying to get better) then this would seem like a suitable option

I'm sure they could've gotten a "real" drummer for those sessions too if they had wanted to.

If memory serves me correctly, didn't GNR almost hire the drummer in The Replacements before they decided on Matt Sorum? They also auditioned someone else, but I forgot who it was.

They tried working with Martin Chambers and Adam Maples.

Damn Jarmo, you've got a great memory!! I used to know all the facts and tidbits about GNR, but as all this time goes by, I forget alot of it. Thanks for the memory refresh!! Do you remember why they didn't pick either of those two guys??

I don't know.
I also remember reading something about them trying a Finnish drummer named Jussi Tegelman too. I think he's thanked in the UYI booklet.
Edit: "At some point Jussi Tegelman was helping GN'R out on drums, after Steven Adler was forced to leave the band. One can find the name Jussi Tegelman on the thanks list of the "Use Your Illusion I & II" albums."

Is it true that Duff played drums on CW. In my UYI2 booklet it says Steve? Someone clarify for me please?

The cover story for Adler being fired really doesn't hold water. Yes it is true that he was having serious problems getting off heroin but the rest of the band were in an equally bad situation. The other band members made claims about him needing dozens of takes to record CW but given the fact that Adler sued them they are hardly impartial eyewitnesses. There has been alot of specualtion that the real reason the band turned their backs on him was due to Axl's girlfriend ODing at Adlers house.

Put simply, Duff is not good enough - not the calibre that GNR deserve. If yoiu ve seen him drumming in an interlude on one of the Tokyo vids, you'll see exactly why they didnt use Duff.
Steven got somewhat of a raw deal I reckon - the band sound definitley changed with Sorum on board and not necessarily for the better. (although he was technically the better of the two)

I think Civil War was recorded a year or two before UYI's. It was the last track recorded (that was released) by the original lineup

Yeah, but they were stitched up from multiple parts instead of "the GNR way" of a single take. I believe this was a major issue as I recall Matt saying something about screwing up on the final fill when recording Coma and having to redo the track after an otherwise perfect performance. I mean, c'mon, who would've ever even noticed that? It's a simple fill after a silence gap so it must've been a rather important principle for the band.
I can only imagine his feelings then. Probably wasn't exactly the first take on the song when he got it 99,9% correct and still...

I heard it took Steven over 70 takes for the producer be able to get enough good takes to piece all the different parts together.

Now, you're just trying to make Steven look bad.
August 23rd, 1993
- Axl testifies against Steven Adler in the Los Angeles Superior Court. During the testimony Axl revealed that Steven couldn't play due to his drug abuse and that his drumtrack on "Civil War" had to be edited from over
60
takes.
