Axl really never gives a reason in the Making of Estranged, when he talks about it he is vague, says they wanted a certain ending and they couldn't do it so they had to figure out what else they could do.  He never did say it was because of the breakup that plans changed but maybe it is.  When you say story do you mean the Without You story or just what happen with the vids?
