Richard Fortus, the phenomenon

« on: March 21, 2005, 09:40:38 AM »

I was listening to the song "the fly" (U2- Archtung Baby) and especially the way the guitar sounds on it, it's a little bit electronized, and it sounds really great, very powerfull. It makes me think to Rihad and more generally to the new GN'R sound, I think we could see that kind of guitar sound on the album "chinese democracy", or at least on Rihad. It would explain the role of Pittman in the band: the guitar sound could be remodelized, modernized. I've never seen the new GN'R yet but once I read a review where a guy said "don't underrate the role of pittman, because during the show he remodelized the guitar sound with his keyboard", he said something like that.

"The fly" intro / http://81.176.74.27/f~e/f7/uob/61567/16253683/01-fly.prev.mp3
Don't you think it sounds a little bit like what Axl wants to explore?

For the youngest people on this board, U2 "Archtung baby" was released in 1991. It was a new sound U2 wanted to explore, more "modern" like Axl wants to do right now with "Chinese Democracy".?
"Archtung Baby" was an enormous success for U2, and probably the best album they have ever made.?

I really love this song and the all Achtung Baby! album. I think this is one of the great rock albums ever made. It`s to pity that U2 can`t do something great like that again. One is one of my favorite ballad ever - so simple song, with great lirycs and deep influence. 5 stars

I've said it before, but I'll say it again: If Axl can do something similar to GN'R that U2 did with "Achtung Baby", then I'll be really happy....

"Achtung Baby" is my favorite U2 album.

Yes it is an amazing album and the Edge does some of his most wonderfully atmospheric playing to date.

I do think CD will be more layered and symphonic however, as Achtung is essentially the sound of a 4 piece rock band (albeit with lush, widescreen production).

The modern elements infused in the sound such as the guitar effects you speak of Nesquick, work very well - i think the trick there is that it was not overdone and hence it has aged well as it is non-specific to a time/era  ie. it still sounds "modern" almost 15 years on (unlike, say for example Pretty Hate Machine by NIN)

The real key to it's greatness though, are the songs and their delivery - you can't get past the fact that U2 wrote some of their most moving/affecting pieces of music on this album and if Axl wants to take any cues at all from Achtung Baby, I hope this is it.

I also think the blues guitar solo (in the middle of the song) may have a sound treatment, I mean effects on it). There are sounds you cannot reproduce during a show. I do think that solo will sound less" dry" on the album, because of studio effects. Do you see the guitar solo in "So fine"? It sounds like if you were in the stars, there's this little effect, I would bet it could be the same thing for the blues.

Wow, informative post, we don't care what your favourite U2 album is.

Umm , who all are "we" that you are talking about? The HTGTH mods? You and your family or the whole memberlist of HTGTH as a whole? Maybe you dont care what his fav U2 album is but you cant speak for everyone else here on the board.  Roll Eyes

anyways , back on topic , I'm sure some of the guitars on democracy will be very processed .. Buckethead is an effects guru .. he loves using effects to create new exciting sounds and soundscapes ... I've heard rumblings about robin finck using guitar rig and it's plugins and also amp farm and it's plugins. Just the other day in an article someone wrote where axl commented in a sarcastic way about a really LOUD guitar sound "it's not really loud enough is it?"

I'm sure there will be some amazing guitar tones and playing on the album .. and as much as alot of people fear it will be a keyboard/piano driven album I think guitars will really be at the forefront of the music. Dirty and raunchy guitars.

Maybe, this isn't a OMGLOLZ WHATS YOUR FAVOURITE U2 ALBUM thread. Is this Bad Obsession? No. This is the Guns N' Roses section.

Okay?

No , it's not ok to be honest man. I think it's rubbish that you jump in and belittle a member for saying a certain U2 album was his favorite when just a few replies before that we have jarmo saying ...

"Achtung Baby" is my favorite U2 album.
/jarmo

So why is you go off on HTGTH member *Izzy* but you dont call Jarmo on stating his favorite U2 album?!  Huh Doesnt seem very fair to me.

My fav U2 album is the POP .. just love Discotechque .. hope GNR has a song on democracy with that kinda "scratchy guitar sound like on that song!  ok

Umm, sorry Saul but I stated that the album is question is my favorite U2 album just because they did something different, and it turned out great. Trying something different, like what Axl's doing, doesn't have to mean it's gonna suck. Seems like many people assume it'll suck because it's not the same old thing that they're used to.

Stating you like some other album without adding anything to the discussion is pointless, as AdZ pointed out.

actually jarmo , within this thread you said nothing of the sort .. all you said was "if gnr can make an album like acthung baby I'll be really happy ... acthing baby is my fav U2 album"  You really didnt make any mention of new sounds , taking chances etc etc in this thread .. maybe you said it somewhere before ... I dunno?

It just didnt seem to me that you said anything that different then *Izzy* said .. but you guys are the mods so you know whats right and wrong here I guess.  Huh

Well, back on topic...

Nesquick, I agree when you say that there are some sound that can't be reproduced live. But don't make sense say that "it would explain the role of Pittman in the band". When you say it, seems that before it, there was no reason for have him in the band.

When a guy like Pittman is in the band, you can be sure that the main idea is create different textures in the song, and this is the reason why he's in the band.

Well, that's your problem I guess. I didn't just list my favorite U2 album in that post. Maybe you can see the on topic part of the post if you look again?  If you like to complain about my post some more, please do so in the Feedback section.

Anybody who knows their U2, knows that they went from one traditional rock album to something that wasn't traditional.

They incorporated other influences into their music which made it exciting. Seems like Axl's trying to do the same. Chinese Democracy doesn't sound like anything GN'R did in the 80s/90s to me.

I'd like the guitar sounds to be balanced to the whole music. I mean, these days, and if you take contraband as an example, weiland's voice seems to low for me. Drums, guitars and bass are, imo, way to loud compared to the loudness of weiland's voice.

I'd like chinese democracy to be more balanced, so you can clearly hear axl's voice. A sound evolution would be cool, of course, but keep axl's voice as loud as it has been in the previous masterpieces beer. I don't know if someone else has this opinion or is it just me? maybe i'm loosing my ear?? am i aging??? nervous

Okay, I'm sorry? Sad

"The Joshua Tree is my favourite U2 album" I don't see how this offends anyone or detracts from the thread, anyway I won't do it again

Thanks fo backin' me up Saul, but I probably shouldn't have done that post since it didn't really have anything to do with this thread

ON TOPIC: I would like CD to have a classic rock sound or glam metal sound (yes I do actually like glam), it's probably not gonna happen though

You can have a classic-rock sound and more modern textures both on the same album. It depends on the arrangements. "Archtung Baby" contains both. Just listen to "even better than the real thing"? Wink

I know but I'm more concerned whether CD will even be guitar based? Undecided
I know it sounds stupid but there is a chance that there will be many tracks with no guitar

I don't think so. I had exactly the same feeling you have right now during years. I was extremely afraid CD could sound totally industrial or techno rock and all this crap like ministry but I don't think so. It won't be a "my world" or" silkworms" type of album. Axl is not stupid, he knows it would mean the end of his carreer forever if he ever does a record like that. He knows it would be a phenomenale failure and mistake. I really believe the record will be based on guitars, but with some modern arrangements, some modern touch. I trust Axl to make great music. And don't forget that among all the "insiders" of the album, none of them ever said the album sounded indus (remember zakk wylde)
You can add some modern touch without sounding "techno". I guess this is what Axl wants to do.
"the blues","madagascar" and even "rihad" sound Rock.

I would say "Chinese Democracy" could be the "Artchtung Baby" of Guns N' Roses.
