vicarious existance is a fucking waste of time

« on: March 12, 2005, 01:36:26 AM »

There was an article in Blunt magazine (Australian indie rock magazine) at the end of last year and it had a short article/interview with Duff about VR etc.

Anyway, I'm not gonna type up the entire article, but looking back at it again recently, I came across something Duff mentioned that I thought was pretty interesting.

Duff: "I hope this lasts a long time. I can't predict the future, but we have a six album contract with RCA and I'd like to get to six albums"

I found this interesting because I thought VR were signed up for a 3 album deal with RCA?

Do you think maybe with the success Contraband has had, that maybe VR renegotiated a deal for 6 albums instead?

Hmmm....

That probably includes possible "Greatest Hits"/"Best Of" compilations, live albums, B-Side albums, etc.

Not sure about the validity of a 6 album deal, most deals for multiple albums are weighted heavily in the labels favor.  IE, If the label wants x number of albums from a particular artist, they have exclusive rights to those albums.  Then, if a band falls out of favor, the label can drop them without penalty at any time throughout the relationship.

Well, like Booker said, part of their 6 album deal could be live albums as well as 'best of' compilations.
They seem to be on a good run at the moment with writing new songs and wanting to get material out, I don't see why they wouldn't get through to 6 albums.

Contraband is 1, a live album is 2, a greatest hits is 3, so who says they couldn't release 3 more albums of original material?

Also, from what the VR guys are saying, they all want to do this until they can't physically play anymore, which could be another 30 years (look at the Stones!)

Yeah, but you can't have a greatest Hits album after just one studio release!

I am not surprised if VR have a 6 album deal.  RCA are more about talent.  VR would NOT have signed to a shitty deal.  You think they needed too?  VR had labels fighting over them.  Remember that.  RCA would have had to work hard to get VR.

And why the fuck would Duff lie about that shit?  He wouldn't.

I know, and I'm not saying they would release the Greatest Hits straight after Contraband, but it might be in the contract of their 6 album deal. Like say for example - after 3 albums of original material they could put out a greatest hits compilation of hits from those 3 albums.

Yeah, I really don't see VR as lasting a long time. They are probably gonna punch out as much as they can while they are here. I really cannot see STP not getting back together at some point.

I agree. At some point, Scott Weiland is going to go back to STP.There is no way Velvet Revolver will do 6 albums. I believe the next one will probably be the last. Unless VR hires a new singer. I would prefer they get someone else anyway. I think Scott is much more suited for STP then he is for VR.

I don't know about that. Although he's patched things up with the STP guys, I think he has a really strong bond with the VR guys now, especially Duff who helped him get clean and sort out his life.
As much as I like STP, I'd prefer VR to be around forever over a STP reunion.

Why? What is the logic? if you listen to Contraband there is much more STP influence than GNR.

It'd be so fuckin' cool to get three studio albums from Velvet Revolver, then of course you throw in the greatest hits and possibly a live album!   Hell maybe we'll get four studio albums!   Ain't no point in lookin' too far ahead anyway, who knows what might happen but I hope Velvet Revolver stick around for a heck of a long time.

There would seem to be no reason for Scott to go back to STP.  That's where he had his biggest troubles in life, with the heroin, arrests, etc.  VR has been a clean road for him, especially being with former addicts who have turned their lives around.  If VR ever breaks up (or when, which is hopefully a while from now), I wouldn't be surprised if he either went solo again or just retired from the industry.  Remember, he was almost gonna do that 2 years ago.

generally, record labels don't recognize live or greatest hits albums as counting towards the number of albums a band is contracted for. They could have a completely different deal and maybe they count, but on the whole they don't.
