Is this a fake thread?  You're joking right!  hihi

C'mon!  I mean Deep Purple was good but they didn't hold a candle to Black Sabbath!

Sabbath was the heavy-metal version of Zeppelin for heaven's sake.  Comparing Deep Purple to Sabbath is like comparing The Who to Zeppelin.

In other words, no comparison.

Actually, I kinda like Deep Purple more than Sabbath too.? As good a band is Black Sabbath is, I have to be in a certain macabre mood to listen to them, like on Halloween and stuff like that.? Deep Purple, on the other hand, has hard rockin' tunes that are good for almost any occasion (witness "Knockin' At Your Back Door", the all-time greatest anal sex anthem ever).? Plus, I don't see how anyone can listen to "Child in Time" and not realize that Ian Gillan was one of the most talented hard rock vocalists ever, what with those absolutely incredible screams (message to today's metal and screamo bands: THAT'S how a rock vocalist with talent screams).? Yes, Ozzy's been around for longer.? But I prefer Ozzy's solo stuff.? If you compare Ian in Deep Purple and Ozzy in Sabbath, Ian is far superior.? And Ian Blackmore was a cooler guitarist than Tony Iommi.? Iommi may have written the heaviest riffs ever, but I prefer Blackmore's classical flash.? That's just my opinion, of course.

So while Sabbath I think is definitely the more original band (nobody sounded like them at the time), I still prefer Deep Purple.? But I think "Smoke on the Water" and "Iron Man" are both horrendously overplayed.

Hey man, I never said I didn't like Deep Purple.  I do.  In fact I saw 'em in concert with Ronnie James Dio and The Scopions a few years ago.

I just don't think they were as good as Black Sabbath.

By the way, cool name.  Definitely the BEST Dave Chappele skit EVER!  hihi  rofl

And you're supposed to be "Captain Obvious?!"  Huh

Deep Purple < Black Sabbath (the orginal definitive heavy-metal band)

The Who < Led Zeppelin (the original definitive hard-rock band)

Sabbath. No question. They created an entire new genre of music. Deep Purple should have broken up in the late 70's, they were getting old and tired out. They instead had to put out more and more mediocre music. Black Sabbath's post Ozzy albums, like Heaven and Hell, on the other hand, are some of the most underrated albums ever. Sabbath > Purple

Comparing Black Sabbath to Deep Purple is like comparing shit to gold. There aren't many bands who can say that they made music of the quality Purple did. Even Judas Priest have given Deep Purple the credit it deserves. Deep Purple's Mark II with Ritchie Blackmore or the more current version with Steve Morse have been a far greater and more diverse force in music then Ozzy and his increasingly one-dimensional offerings.

I like both bands. Hard to choose.

But here is an album that is a combo of the two: Black Sabbath's "Born Again" (1983). An awesome, awesome album. VERY underrated. It has Ian Gillian on lead vocals. "Trashed," "Zero the Hero" "Digital Bitch," "Born Again." This album RULES and kicks all kinds of ass. Pick up a copy.

Dude, have you ever listened to the Tony Martin Sabbath era? DP on the other hand, since the mid 90s, when they got Steve Morse on guitar, have put out pretty solid work.

While I like both bands a lot, Deep Purple blows Sabbath out of the water in terms of musicianship. Just listen to Deep Purple's third, self-titled album.
