SLAM DUNK!!!

« on: February 18, 2005, 07:56:40 PM »

Now this is an impressive compliment!? ok

HARP? APRIL/MARCH 2005

A Different Stripe
Music biz vet and producter extraordinaire JIM DICKINSON's rustic Zebra Ranch studio gives artists a place for escape

JIM DICKINSON HAS A KNACK FOR BEING AROUND WHEN MUSIC HISTORY is being made.? He started out as an artist on the legendary Sun records and went on to work as a session keyboardist and engineer at Memphis' equally seminal American Recording with Chips Moman and Ardent Studios with John Fry.? These experiences left Dickinson with a deft, dixie-fried production touch that can be heard on his '70s productions for Big Star, Ry Cooder and others.
? ? ?Jim's piano playing is etched in the collective consciousness thanks to his keyboard contributions to the Rolling Stones "Wild Horses" and Bob Dylan's Time Out of Mind.? His music has graced films like Paris Texas, The Border and Crossroads.? As a producer, he has maintained his edge for over four decades, as is attested by recent projects with Jim Mathus' Knockdown Society, Jon Spencer, T-Model Ford, the North Mississippi Allstars (Led by Jim's sons Luther and Cody) and the forthcoming new album by John Hiatt.

Gypsy note:? Then it goes on about his studio and there's an interview that I'm not posting.

Jim Dickinson on:
TOMMY STINSON.? There are people who say Keith Richards is the walking embodiment of rock'n'roll, but it's Tommy Stinson.? And I know 'em both.

That's a pretty nice compliment for Tommy.

So in other words, GN'R has a member who's more rock n' roll than Keith Richards.  Grin

Thanks for posting.

Somebody mentioning Axl cancelling shows gets more replies than a nice thing like this, that's just..... Wrong.

I guess negativity is a lot more fun.  Tongue

What makes it funnier to me is all the posts I've read on this board about GN'R not being rock n' roll. They're industrial, techno, disco or whatever.

The quote is not new baby  yes  They probably took it from an old interview. Unless Jim Dickinson repeats himself word for word. He compliments Tommy every time he's given the opportunity (see also the article about Bob Stinson that Gypsy posted in the Bad Obsession section a few months ago).

If it's a quote from such a fuckin' "loooong time ago" why didn't you ever post it before?
Not controversial enough for you?? Not negative enough for you?
It's not a quote from the Bob Stinson articles that I posted here:? ?http://www.heretodaygonetohell.com/board/index.php?topic=16757.0? ?and even if it was, only 40+ viewers even opened that thread.

People only focus on the negative.? People are scum.

Gosh, chill out. What's your problem? If I posted everything I read about music, it would fill up 3 pages of threads. So, FYI, here's something very similar from an interview I posted several months ago :

Magnet Mag : The last thing I wanted to ask you was about (Pleased To Meet Me producer) Jim Dickinson?s quote where he called you ?the walking embodiment of rock ?n? roll.? Do you see yourself that way, or is that just b.s.?
Tommy : Wasn?t the rest of that also the dick, the balls, the asshole, the whole thing? [Laughs] I can?t subscribe to that. That?s a little heavy. That?s a little more than I care to live up to

http://www.magnetmagazine.com/interviews/stinson.html

Happy now? And that's just one of several quotes I read but am too lazy to look for right now. I just never post them because the articles usually deal with the Replacements and not GN'R.
I hope you don't consider me one of the negative people on this board, otherwise there's a serious problem of communication between us. I'm anything but negative.

No.? I'm NOT happy now.? You didn't post that quote before.? You posted a link ...

I've just realized that interview from Magnet Magazine hadn't been posted yet :
http://www.magnetmagazine.com/interviews/stinson.html

I'm guessing it was done sometime in August. It's quite interesting since it covers a wide range of topics.

Was it too much trouble to post that POSITIVE quote when you read it, like I just did?? I didn't type out the entire JD interview because it wasn't relevant to GNR or Tommy.? IMO you should've done the same.

I usually don't consider you among the "negative" people.? This time I did.

I do apologize for singling you out.? Your previous reply just pissed me off.

New or Old I could care less! Its so nice to hear a good compliment directed towards a current member of GnR. This simple thread actually made my day! (call me a simple person).  It also shows Axl knows good old rock n' roll talent when he sees it. Ahhhhh I am just focusing on the positives......and even in this positive thread there is strife! hihi

But the whole article was relevant to Tommy ! Why was I supposed to post just that quote? There were tons of interesting things in that article and I figured that people who were interested would click on the link and read it. I'm not gonna hand everything over on a plate like people are babies and can't read it for themselves.
If you consider that being negative, then fine. I just wonder what you would call the really negative people.....

Isnt Ry Cooder the guy who do all of Ralp Macchios guitar parts for the movie Cross Roads?

You're right!!!? Apparently, Mr. Dickinson has worked with a lot of great musicians, so that makes his comment about Tommy a really awesome compliment because of the talent this guy could compare him to.? ok

Crossroads (1986)
The climax of the film is legendary; arriving home, Brown, who had 'sold his soul' to the Devil at the 'Crossroads' as a young man (just as his friend, Johnson, had), attempts to get 'Scratch' (skeletal Robert Judd) to tear up the contract. The Devil informs him that he will, only if Martone can defeat his Champion in a 'Guitar Duel'. If the youngster loses, his soul, as well as Brown's, will be lost, forever. Martone rashly agrees ("I don't believe any of this crap anyway!"), and he and Brown find themselves in a church converted into a dance hall, with demons and lost souls cavorting to the rock strains of insanely talented Jack Butler (Frank Zappa guitarist/composer Steve Vai). With only his love of the Blues, Julliard training, and Brown's 'ju-ju' to aid him, the humbled Martone must play for far more than his life, in a 'Duel' between Ry Cooder (doubling for Macchio on guitar) and Vai that is so fabulous that it is astonishing that it was NOT included in the soundtrack album!
