In January 2005, Slash gave a brief interview on the UK's Virgin Radio.  The most interesting part came when the DJ asked whether Axl had contacted Slash to congratulate him on the success of VR.  Slash replied that he had not spoken to Axl personally.  But, talking to a 'mutual friend', he had learned Axl's reaction to Contraband.  Axl does, apparently, wish that 'he had produced' the album.  The DJ then quipped 'yeah, release date 2010', and Slash laughed.

What Axl meant by this is anyone's guess.  Was he admiring the album, and wishing he had been involved?  Or was he critising it, saying that he could have produced it better?

Despite assuming that Slash is telling the truth (not a certainty), the story gains credibility because the reaction is neither too positive or negative.  Any thoughts:  revealing, or b/s?

This isn't no surprise to me. Axl has always listened to the ex members albums. I would be kinda curious as to which ex member solo album is Axl's favorite.

Hardly.

It could mean he thought the album blew and his production might have improved it.

Very probable.  Axl is a control freak after all, and even if he's not involved with Slash anymore, he's still probably thinking "he should have done it this way!"

That's interesting. thanks for posting.

If that's all true, he wasn't dissing it but perhaps he meant he could have produced it better.
I don't think it's complete BS. I bet Axl is really into producing records lately.

I definitely take this as a positive comment.. if Axl were talking about a shit record, I doubt he'd wish he was a part of it.

I didnt think they had any "mutual friends" left  Undecided

But if it's true - can you imagine Dirty Little Thing with a piano added, and a couple of cowbells?

I think it just means Axl thinks he could of made the album much, much, much more better than it is already. I wonder how it would sound if he did produce it? Would it have been better? Would we still be waiting for it?

that's very interesting...it's a kind of "cold" rapprochement through a "comun friend"...maybe the first step to a reconcilliation?

I think it's a dis. In other words: "As usual, Slash and Duff can't ever reach their full potential unless I'm there to control them." We all know how "fond" Axl was of S+D's solo work thus far- I think VR is no different in Axl's eyes. hihi

well one of the older threads on here i recall said that axl had listened to the album and actually thought it was good, which prompted him to make his album better.

Thats not a perfect re telling on whatever i read here but it was something like that.

So i guess chinese democracy in axls eyes is not as good as contraband. Which means it wont be a very good GNewR album if all this is true.

I'm sure Axl somehow got his hands on an advanced copy of Contraband, being among the most curious to hear it.

His reputed take on the album seems much like what he's said in the past regarding his ex-band mate's efforts.  Good ideas and parts...but he could have made it better.

produced it! HA id rather hear what kind of lyrics or impact Axl would of had if he would of been part of the album. what kind of swing he would of put on Fall to pieces? or slither? My guess is the album would of been alot different more introspective, one thing about VR i dont like is the lyrics
