I just wanted to know how was the release date announced...because as far as I understand, there was much hype around those albums too....Was there any statement regarding the release or was it something different???

I remember reading music magazines and they always had small news stories which would say "is planned for release in April". Then it was May or June.

But eventually, as far as I remember, there was a mention in our daily newspaper which stated the new album was coming out on September 16th and that it was actually two albums.

I heard about it on MTV news and read it in Billboard the same day...back then, Billboard was THE source for that kind of thing.  The announcement came in early-to-mid August, and it stated that the firm album release date had been set and that the first single, "Don't Cry", would come out (as I recall) 2 weeks before that.
