rap and country, absolutely despisse that shit

punk is the best thing to happen to rock n roll, and the worst

But good charlotte is good,? they just fellinto the trap many bands fall into.? The young and the hopeless was a greatalbum, very underrated.? nyways punk has been horribly twisted, b4 it was anti-main stream andpeople have made it main stream

tis all

not to be an asshole, but i really really REALLY have to disagree there... first off, real country is very good, very impressive to hear the guitar players go at it... and yes punk is good in it's influence, but the actual music itself is/was beyond shit, liek i said in my first post it was the same stuff over and over and over.

and good charlotte... i cant even go there

Fuck. I don't care that "Punk is soooo influecial". The music is crap. The message isn't very coherent either. In fact, I would go as far as to say that Punk is the most overrated form of "music", if you like to call it that.

Most punk I know of, new or old, is some douche blabbering about non-comformity. That is, before he gets in his personal airplane and flies to a meeting with company executives.  People who made it popular are kids, and kids are stupid. The only reason Punk is liked, because it was different. If Johnny Rotten recorded the sounds of him taking a crap, while mumbling somethign about not liking the government, people would still consider him an innovator, aritst of his time, blah blah blah blah.

Now before you start getting all techincal on me here, I realize there are some good lyricists who lead Punk bands, who are probably very smart and talented. Lets concenrate on the other 99% here.

In fact, while I was writing this, I felt so inspired, I came up with a punk song of my own:

Conformity Can Eat My Ass
By Captain Obvious

I hate conformity
I hate society
I hate authority
I like butt sex

Yeah, yeah yeah....conformity can eat my ass

I hate rules
They are a waste of my life
Politicians are a bunch of tools
And I really wanna do your wife

Yeah yeah, yeah...conformity like totally sucks, dude. [in an angry vocie]

Oh, dude those lyrics totally rocked, you've rekindled my love of punk? ok (I'm being serious, those lyrics actually are good)
By the way, "the most overated music", punk ain't popular at all nowadays compared to rap and r n'b and hip hop? no

I hate today's music scene.  I know there will always be this kind of music for the sake of money and commercialism, but today it is awful.  All these kids trying to look dirty, like they don't care what's going on or what they look like.  But you know they have all these stylists and personal trainers.  And they try to say they are rock or punk, but they're pop stars.  They wear band t-shirts of bands they've never heard of.

It's better to burn out than to fade away...

« Reply #69 on: February 27, 2005, 03:31:24 AM »

I've become a lot more open-minded in the last couple of years or so.  Originally I would just sit there with my classic rock and tell anyone who wasn't listening to what I was that they "should try listening to some REAL music, like Guns N' Roses."  The thing I've realized since, though, is that a good song is a good song.  When you criticize a song or artist, or genre, who's to say that it isn't "real music"?  What are the definitions of music?  At this point I'm willing to accept that anything with a melody or a beat is, technically, music.

So I'm getting into all kinds of genres these days.  Rap, country, thrash metal, folk, classical...almost anything goes, man.  But there are still a few genres that I simply cannot like:

1.  Death Metal
I'm sorry, but I just hate this stuff, and I can sum it up in one reason: the cookie monster vocals.  These guys uttering gutteral roars with absolutely zero melody (burn in hell Cannibal Corpse) just drives me insane.  But there's also the lyrics, which are obsessed with death, gore, and disgustingly obscure medical terminology.  And the music has barely any melody, it's just riff after pounding riff going a million miles an hour.  I think black metal is okay, because the vocals are higher and cleaner, there are atmospheric keyboards and stuff, and the bands are more theatrical with better lyrics. But death metal will always be an inane, shitty genre to me.

2.  Trance Music
I had my first college roommate a few months ago.  I'm a total rocker dude, but this guy was only into trance music.  Now, I thought I could stand it...but this music was beyond me.  Each track lasts like 2 hours.  It's the exact same monotonous pounding beat, with a repetitive little "hook" attached to it.  It never changes, it's just BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM [spoken interlude] BOOM BOOM BOOM.  Gah!  It just never ended, and there was so little musical development...nothing even resembling a catchy melody.  And this is supposed to be DANCE music!

3.  Teen Pop
Back in the day this meant Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and the various boy bands and girl groups.  Nowadays, it still refers to them, as well as their solo careers.  But now there's a new breed - the teen actresses with record contracts.  They're everywhere these days, and they just keep getting worse.  Hilary Duff, Lindsay Lohan, blah blah blah.

4.  Latin Pop
Jennifer Lopez, Ricky Martin, Enrique Iglesias, Marc Anthony.  I just don't like them...too wimpy, melodramatic, and phony.  But notice I said only Latin POP.  Santana and Los Lonely Boys rock!

5.  Screamo
Emo, while nerve-grating, sometimes yields songs I like.  But this new phenomenon of "screamo" just drives me nuts.  Take an act like Alexisonfire, which has become really popular here in Canada for God knows why.  Their songs have no discernible hooks whatsoever.  It's just the same confused musical backing with a guy screaming his head off.  What a bunch of bullshit.

Besides this, there's plenty of artists I don't like.  I dislike most of the rap scene, but occasionally there'll be a good song that captures my attention, like Jay-Z's "99 Problems" or various songs by Eminem.  Bling-bling rap is what I really don't like; all these guys talking about how rich they are and how many babes they get.  It doesn't go on the list here, though, because occasionally there'll be a guilty pleasure like Nelly's "#1".  Same deal with the majority of modern rock; I hate those lame nu-grunge bands with their Drop-D riffs and vaguely angsty lyrics.

Rap/hip-hop just blows... I hate the genre.

Emo sucks.  stupid emo kids with their crying.  I'll put the poser punk in with the emo kids, they're all starting to write the same sorts of songs, nowadays.

I'm starting to hate new country music more and more (never really liked country music, but the classics are great.  Also, I don't consider Johnny Cash and John Prine country).  Working in a grocery store does that to you I suppose.  I want to close my office door and crank something good.

Death metal... what's the point of a song if you can't decipher the lyrics?  "hey everyone! lets tune our guitars to drop B and scream random syllables." Fuck off, seriously.

And finally, Nickelback, Theory of a Deadman and every other band that sounds exactly the same.  You know... they have that shitty singer, the same three power chords in every song, and to create a build up (in EVERY single song) they hit the same chord repeatedly to make a a Guh-guh-guh-guh-guh-guh-guh-guh sound... you know... "guh-guh-guh-guh-guh-guh-guh-guh *pause* they say that a hero can save us..." Fuck, that's really annoying.
