Hi,

I've had a discussion with a friend of mine about the music category gn'r fits into.
He says gn'r is hair metal just like poison and van halen.
I've told him that gn'r is everything but not hair metal, I think "glam rock/classic rock with blues and punk elements" describes gn'r musical direction the best.
What do you think is the best category for gn'r both oldgnr and newgnr?

to call it hair metal is just ignorant, gn'r killed hair metal...

sounds like your friend is a hateR.

Hard Rock sounds about right.
Their image was glamy at the beginning, but the music was straight down in your face hard rock.

It would be hard to define the new band though since we dont have enough material to judge them on.  peace

Anything goes.

I agree with everyone on this thread so far. It?s difficult to put this band into one existing category minuter than hard rock/rock.

i think one of the biggest misconceptions about gnr is that they were a hair metal band...GNR IS NOT HAIR METAL...they may have been popular during the hair metal era, but their music is not hair metal...gnr was influenced by 70's blues-based rock bands like: led zeppelin, aerosmith, queen, etc...i consider gnr to be "blues-based hard rock"...the new gnr...now that's a different story...no one knows what category they fall into, since we haven't actually heard an album yet...

gnr was the opposite of hair metal...they were against the hair metal sound...they were trying to bring back the classic rock of the 70's...that is what made gnr so great, and that is why they are still popular today - they didn't try to sound like all the other cheesy hair bands of the 80's..

It's Classic Rock (at least for the old band).
GN'R have strong bluesy roots, Slash is a blues/rock kind of guitar player ala jimmy page, joe perry and Axl Rose is very influenced by blues-rock and classic-rock too (elton john, queen). Izzy is a folk rock player ala Bob Dylan.

For the new band: I really don't know. I think their weakest? point is that I can't feel their soul as a "band". It's not cohesive because They all come from too many different directions and yeah...that's not cohesive IMO. For exemple, Tommy and Richard perfectly fit in this classic-rock GN'R style (music, spirit, style, feeling, just Rock n' Roll!), while Buckethead, Robin Finck and Brain seem to be the opposite of Rock n' Roll (especially Robin and BH). I don't think they are the right guys for this band. I think Axl should bring Rockers because that's what GN'R is about. He is making an enormous mistake with a Gothic/industrial/indus guitarist on lead guitar. Come on, GN'R is not ministry or marylin manson... nervous

I agree about BH but not about Robin, he may look goth, but I fucking love ROBIN !!!!!
Did you see rock in rio ?? when you compare robins solos to BH........woah !!! BH is the skilled guitar player but Robin has the licks that KILL muthertrucker !!!!! ROBIN is Rock N' Roll smoking and he looks damn cool

IMAGE IS NOTHING, MUSIC IS EVERYTHING.

maybe he is inventin and makin the genre more including, like elvis did with what was called black music-

and axl is makin that rockbands does not need have that certainity Smiley

axl used the word agressive electroncica when he tried to describe the second album in 99 Shocked

think gnr will always be under the term rockband anyway beer

The old GNR - Hardrock/Metal ! Dont Deny it! Some old GNR songs are more Metal than Rock
The new?? - Hmm.. we dont know for sure, but i guess it will be a meltingpot of; Metal/Hardrock/Indus.

No, it's not metal. Metallica is metal and there is no ressemblance with GN'R.
GN'R is close to Aerosmith or Led Zeppelin type of music, and it's Rock N' Roll.

However VR is metal. they sound metal...and they sound realy different of GN'R.

Ohhh Noo!
Velvet Revolver is real Rock N Roll!
Guns N Roses is more close to metal.

What is try to say, is that u cant put GNR in a musical genere... They have everything from bad boy rock n roll! to heavy metal...
And im sure thats how the new GNR also will be like. I dont know that, i just take a wild guess! But if u listen to Oh My God, for example?Huh Thats Metal! Oh My God is a metal song! No doubt about it! If u cal that Rock n roll, or hard rock, well, then i dont agree with u! Silkworms is some kind of Industrial metal song. Chinese Dem is more like Hardrock... so are Maddy
