Sorry to rehash my old post....but has anyone played the Epiphone ES-175?? Just wondering if it was anywhere near as great as it's 5x's expensive counterpart.?

Isn't the ES-175 orignally a Epiphone guitar? Before Gibson bought Epiphone, Epi was their toughest competitor, and I think they made these guitars. So I think the Epiphone ES-175 is the "real-deal"

I think all Epiphone hollowbodies are pretty good.

I've got an Epiphone Les Paul Custom and Wildkat and especially the Wildkat with it's P-90's is a great guitar.

Nah the ES-175 first came out in 1949 from Gibson.....they didn't buy out Epiphone until the late 50's.?

Epiphone bought out Casino though and they made that their signature guitar.   The Beatles popularized it after they all got one.  They're really good, I actually got to play one and the price tag on it was only $600.  Really great deal.

Hi. Okay this post is not about a Epiphone Les Paul in particular, but it is a Epiphone guitar, rather than making a new thread and getting blasted, maybe someone can give me their feedback here. In advance I apologise for the length of this post, but I just need to give the background

About two or three years ago I upgraded my shitty ibanez GIO to a Epiphone SG Sunburst. Nice guitar, pretty decent for the price at the time, and I traded in my old ibanez for it as well. Now back then I was just concerned about getting something with a nice heavy sound or whatever, and it was good enough for me. Although recently I've been trying to improve my technique in the guitar, and starting to try to get in more with the technical side of things, and I finally persued my on again off again interest to get a hollow body guitar of some sort.

Now I'm on a very very limited budget.. I would have traded in the SG but I want to have an alternative to that, in the event I ever get back into a gigging band, for different tunings, but also something thats genuinely different in sound, not just another guitar for the sake of having one if you know what I mean

I went to one of the local guitar stores in Sydney and had a look at the range of hollow body, you have all sorts, ibanez, yamaha, gibson of course (hah, not in this lifetime for me), but as always, i resorted to my trusted epiphone brand, they are a pretty good alternative, of course not the same quality as gibson, but close enough, again considering my budget. my attention had been bought to an Epiphone Dot model, a copy of the original Gibson model etc, I'd seen a few different musicians using these, and of course, the hollow sound. My choices were narrowed down to a Epiphone Dot which was about $800 and the Epiphone Dot which is about $600

They are both very similar guitars, the only difference is the Dot has the pickguard, more knobs for volume/tone control etc. But my argument was that, I'm not an active touring musician, it wa ssomething that was going to be used for recording more, and of course, in the event I get into a gigging band etc. Considering the fact that I'd have to fork out about $150 for a secure case, I decided to go with the Epiphone Dot Studio

The one I have on layby is a bit of a darker red, wine-ish colour

I tried this out with my Marshall 10watt amp that they happened to sell at the store, and, considering the price of the guitar, it sounded SO MUCH cleaner, a better distorted tone, not as buzzing, not as messy sounding. The funny thing was, the guy in the store (good bloke, if anybody here is around Sydney, it's Allans music in the city) was interested in seeing how it sounds since he had a Epiphone Dot, and he plugged it in and he was pretty amazed himself, I wa sjoking with him about the fact that it's his job to make the guitar appealing to me but he was genuinely surprised by it

Anyway I was wondering if anybody around here had any feedback on this guitar? The off chance that anybody owns a model similar to this? It feels pretty comfortable, nice sound...I'm not a technical guitar player by any means, but it does make me sound better. I'm not a shredding virtuoso, I try to do more bluesy leads I guess, and it complements it so well

I have played around with an Epi Dot Studio and also sat with someone who was reviewing one.  Both of us thought it was great.  I would personally change the pick-ups though.

thanks. yeah thats the advice i usually get with epiphone guitars, to change pickup.. ill look into it.

First of all, I am not a good guitar player, but I like to play some Guns N' Roses just for fun. Right now I have an Overland, a fender copy. It's a really crappy guitar, the micks are broke and stuff, not a good sound at all. And then I have a Squier Champ amp, not so good but it's enough for me.

So, I have been offered to buy an Epiphone Les Paul Special-II, I think that's the name. It looks good, fine. Maybe not a super-guitar, but I think it's enough for me. I mean, I will give around 1000 swedish kronor for it, thats around 140 dollars. And it's almost brand new.

Is this guitar better? It's a Keiper 111BLS, a german Les Paul-copy. It's a little bit more expensive, but it's nicer (and hopefully better).

well the special 2 is a bolt-on neck but i don't believe they come with 3 pickups

the german one is a set neck

setnecks are usually better for this style of guitar, you can also check out Rondo Music....alot of people swear by them and they are cheap in price i almost bought a rondo music lp guitar but i found a sweet deal on an Epiphone LP Standard so i went with that cuz i could play it before i bought it and it was about the same price, the big thing i had about buying a guitar online is that you don't know what you get until you got it

what about Epiphone LP Special 2s? are they decent for the price or just a peice of cheap crap?

they are supposed to be good for a starter guitar...but i'd say go with the 100 at the very least, but a studio is better

but everyone i know with the special II says they are decent, personally i never played one

they're not that bad with swapped p/ups, but if you have cash to do that go on ebay and find a btter sued guitar

Just bought a black Epiphone LP Standard, and I'm very, very, very satisfied with it. Can't really say much about the pickups yet, but they're fine this far. Now I just need a new amp

I love epiphone guitars. I have one of the last sheratons produced at the US factory before they moved production to Asia, but she is pretty beat up now as I used her as a gigging guitar for years. I switched over to a telecaster for a while but in 2002 I went to buy myself a nice shiny BC Rich. having seen GN'R at Docklands, Buckethead was my latest obsession... A white Epi LP Custom caught my eye and after playing it I had to have it... It is my main guitar now.

The pickups sound great when blasting through a beat up old marshall, and I have no complaints about the pickups or the workmanship. I have played a few Gibson LP's in my time and I loved the sound but never liked 'the feel' of them (Is it just me or do the Gobsons seem to have amazingly wide necks?). The Epi is great. It gives me the sound I want with no tweaking necessary - I simply plug it into the amp and I'm ready to go. Every other guitar I have ever owned needed 'something' for me to be happy with it, but the Epi LP did not.

Depends on the year.  The 50's & 60's necks are completely different - but I can't remember which way round they are.
