I liked mostly uncool peeps that were not glamerized in the spotlight: Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Floyd, Grateful Dead, Allmans & a shithouse more

and im not a cobain fanatic but i can go back in time and remember how crazy and just how great he was before it became uncool to like him.
Maybe it's just this board, maybe it's the GN'R prejudice dude fuck knows but i have never liked him, i'll admit i was only young when he was around so i have no knowledge of him at the time.  Although i have listened to music of his, quite a bit actually and don't hold much time for it, i've seen the 'legendary' unplugged and i was bored.  Now i voted for him to go because i think he was not that talented and very overated, plain and simple.  Seems when i admit to being an Axl Rose fan that's what is seen to be uncool, like i said before every rock club i go to or festival or just out and about i see someone with a T-Shirt with his face and alot of them know less about him than i do, as far as i knew it was cool to like him.  I've been told numerous times i should hate Vince Neil because he hates Axl but i don't, i don't give a fuck.  I judge a band on one thing music and a frontman on his performing, singing etc.  As for the 80s Survivor it should be interesting Vince Neil, Jon Bon Jovi, Bret Michaels, Phil Lewis, Alice Cooper, James Hetfield, David Lee Roth etc. the list goes on i think when that survivor comes along it should be an extra large one.

judging by the last two survivors im almost afraid of who the people on this board will elect as best 80's frontman

Freddie Mercury. If anyone else (including Jon) wins, it'll be so absurd.

---------------------

Not only was Staley awesome with jerry cantrell in Alice in Chains (AIC)
He was awesome in a project called 'Mad Season' which was really different than AIC. Maybe I'll upload a song for you if I find one.

Found this from a site that gives some insight also:

For those of you who don?t know, Layne Staley, lead singer of Alice In Chains was found dead from a drug over dose on the 19th of April aged 34. He had infact died on the 5th of April, the same day that Kurt Cobain committed suicide in 1994.

In all honesty, I was never really a huge fan of the early nineties grunge scene. I found much of it lacking in emotional variety. Yet Alice In Chains were a band who made an impact on me from the start, the very second I heard the mournful desperation of ?Down In A Hole?, Layne and Jerry Cantrell?s voices weaving in and around each other with such beauty for male vocals; one so above, one so below.

Layne won?t become an icon in the way that Kurt Cobain has. Somehow I can?t see teenagers that are tots now wearing t-shirts with his face on in ten years time. His death has come long after the peak of his popularity, and as he didn?t go out in a blaze of glory, he?ll never be entered into that club which consists of Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, Ian Curtis, 2 Pac, Jim Morrison and Freddie Mercury.  But perhaps that is in some ways for the best, as it will be Staley?s music that will remain, a treasured memento from a talented artist. The words of Ian Curtis touched me also as a teenager, even though he had died a full decade before I first heard them, and I hope that others will be able to say the same of Layne Staley?s songs in the future. Layne?s death may have authenticated much of the dark emotion in his words, but let us realise that recognising such emotions is equally a part of beginning a healing process, it just sad that Layne was too far down his own path to realise this when tragedy struck."

Plus let me add that these days within the media - the MTV fuckers or just about anybody else in the media are not allowed OR/Disallow talk about artists who have died of drug related instances. that is the reality of it & its sad that reality can not be reported or praised. < now that is a fact
& when & if it is reported, it is merely a memo.

the end

Awesome post. I very much agree on the fact that Staley won't be part of the "Rock N Roll legends club" and that, in some ways,  perhaps it is better.  It is sometimes sad to see his name forgotten in top ten lists, mentions, documentaries, etc. but in reality, does it really matter? The point is, he was very influencial (esp. with Cantrell) and I am sure his talents/contributions are very recognized, but once again, these are hidden inside the music, not on paper in the form of a top ten list.

Also, I've been listening to Mad Season more often lately, and your're right, they are also fantastic. Anyone who haven't heard and is a fan of AIC, give it a chance. Staley was one of the best of the 90's, and one of the best of all time. There might have been a better duo than Staley/Cantrell but if there was, I still haven't heard them.

 Cool

With friends Mike McCready (Pearl Jam), Barrett Martin (Screaming Trees) and Baker Saunders, Layne formed "Mad Season" in 1994. Their only release is an album called "Above".

The above should lead you to a page of ok quality songs. Keep in mind that this sounds nothing like Alice in Chains & most of the songs were recoreded in 1 take. It's simply blues & emotion & lo-tech gear -? Listen to "Wake UP" & "River of Deceit"
