thats it, i've heard too much about how damn great this band is!! whats a good starter album or whats their best album? i am thinking about getting "Vulgar Display of Power", what do u guys think?
Thats a great into album, the first 6 songs really are difficult to beat - its probably their best, but Far Beyond Driven is a must have follow up purchase!
D/l - Cemetery gates and Hollow - they are the songs that, as a GNR fan, u'll be able to relate to quickest - and both are lyrical masterpieces

How do u define 'class'? GNR were a bunch of white trash thugs, they stole and violently abused women and sold and took drugs - do they have 'class'?
Do you see how 'class' quickly becomes meaningless - u like gnr even though they have no class

Overrated? Yeah maybe that's cause you have no idea what metal is. Cause if you had a the slightest fuckin clue you would know that Pantera is the shit and the shit that started the craze. Dimebag, RIP was one of the greatest guitarist to ever live yet they are overrated? Phil can write some of the darkest yet most meaningful lyrics around yet they are overrated? Get a clue bro.

I was trying to work out what it is with Pantera that makes them so good - and it dawned on me, that as much as anything else, its the production of the music.
Pantera aren't the only band to have amazing riffs, great drumming and powerful vocals - but few bands have everything sounding so good.
Dimebag's guitar tone, the double tracked riffs, the levels all the instruments are set out - that thud of the drums, Vinnie and Dime weren't just great muscians, they could do production better than most - it really makes the band stand out

That's a good point, but for me what makes Pantera special is that they combine the brutality of heavy metal with the swagger and groove of rock n roll. There are very few bands out there that I am aware of that do this, with the exception of White Zombie/Rob Zombie. They're not just one of these metal bands that basically hit their instruments and scream real loud, they have that extra somethin that makes them stand out.

I wonder if it will completely ignore the band during the 80's, when they were full-blown hair metal?

dunno, Dime and Vinnie were pretty proud of that era, from what i understand it was Phil who wanted to crush it.
Hell I even think that Terry Glaze/Lee is on good terms with Vinnie again..who knows maybe he will even say something.
I think that since VH1 is supposed to be neutral we might see a few minutes of that era

I would hope so. But Vinnie is most likely the head guy they came too.. So who knows. Rex will prob be featured. Id say 50/50 shot that Phil is.
