John 5.....most people are just familar with his work with Manson, but he can play a lot of differant things. i also think he would work well with finck (once again, not just because of the manson connection with nin).

There's no one around worthy of the spot.....Mr. Carmen Electra is too damn clinical for GNR....I know, I know, I agree Zakk Wylde is great, but not for GNR...

Yes, John 5 would be a good choice at the moment.

Use Dead Horse for questions like that, please

No offense or anything, but pretty much every single topic in this forum could be considered "dead horse". We don't have any news whatsoever... so lighten up a little bit. As soon as we get some official revealing news and/or album, topics like this will go away. I promise.

In the meantime.... My vote would go to Buckethead replacing himself!!!

Buckethead is pretty great, and it would be great if he could replace himself. ;P

I would have to say either Brian May or Jimmy Paige.

Richard Fortus, the phenomenon

« Reply #14 on: November 29, 2004, 08:38:56 PM »

No replacement.
Fortus/finck is a great pair of guitarists in my opinion and they are enough talented to do the job. They really have chemistry together. you can see it on "nightrain" at chicago and MSG 2002. Just give more guitar solos to Fortus. and with 2 guitarists the band is more cohesive, tighter.

Hey, my first post! How about that?

Let's just pretend for the sake of this thread that it is a confirmed thing that GnR will be carrying on with 3 guitarists. Now, there are so many great players out there with such different styles that any one of them could be a fit for GnR, and take the sound in a totally different direction. I'm not of the school of thought that 'so and so would be a terrible fit for GnR' because frankly that was out the window when Buckethead joined. I personally thought that it was exciting that we were getting this new band with these exciting players, and it will be cool to see who else comes aboard in the coming years. But on to the guitarists (in no particular order, just off the top of my head)....obviously this is all one guy's opinion, but I will do my best to explain my reasons....

1. Marc Ford (ex-Black Crowes) - If we were to see GnR make a return to the sort of old school sound of old Marc Ford would be a great lead player for the band. I could hear him working nicely against Fortus's rhythm work, with a nice warm tone and a great style and skill in his solo's.

2. Billy Morrison (ex-Cult, Doheney, Camp Freddy) - I beleive there was some talk of him in the past (rumors of course), but another guy with some nice rhythm chops and rock n roll attitude. Stick him on rhythm, give Fortus and and Robin lead and let them loose.

(imagine Ford, Fortus and Morrison heading up the GnR guitar beast, that would be a hot sound!)

3. Trey Spruance (Mr. Bungle, ex-Faith No More, Secret Cheifs) - Why not? He falls squarely into that Buckethead 'fringe' category, but he is versed in many styles, and can play his ass off. He would be a great guy to replace Buckethead with. Not quite are 'rock' as the others but he could carry GnR's sound to some interesting places. The fact that he wrote many of the songs and produced much of Bungle's California should say something about his skill in the studio as that album was dense as  hell.

4. Marc Ribot (Tom Waites, John Zorn) - Let's reach way into left field here. If Axl wants to really do something drastic with GnR's sound then Ribot would be an interesting fit. I guess if I could say something about his style I would call him a minimalist Buckethead: lots of chops, but very spare with his notes. His phrasing is very non-traditional without any of that shredapalooza craziness that Buckethead of Bumblefoot get into.

5. Peter Distefano (Porno For Pyros) - Kind of that textural Love and Rockets meets Dave Navarro kind of vibe, but can definitely rock when need be. Might be good with Fortus and Finck, as I see him as kind of being between the two of them. Leave the traditional solos to Fortus and Finck and give the more textural work to Distefano. Could be interesting. Like I said, I'm kind grabbing non-obvious guys when I can because Axl's whole idea behind the new GnR was to go places the old GnR couldn't or wouldn't.

I'll add some more if I think of them.

Agree. Two guitarists such as Fortus and Finck are more than capable. Or better yet...
each new album has a different guest guitarist to give it a unique sound. CD has Buckethead. I know I`m looking waaay ahead on this one...
