If just some lame replacement was needed it wouldn?t be Buckethead, but some lame Slashy rip-off. Forget about stereotype and see the wood not the tree. Then you may catch a glimpse of whole new vistas of the band

Okay, after all the original members except Axl left, Guns N' Roses was an entirely new band. A lot of these guys lacked a lot of personality; I mean, Richard Fortus doesn't exactly look like a rock god, does he? Buckethead was easily the most interesting new member of the band. The guy had a definite aura about him, he was interesting, and even people who weren't into GN'R started to hear about this crazy character with a bucket on his head. A lot of people who went to the 2002 shows went with KFC buckets on their heads; I think that in itself says a lot.
Also, there's the point of Buckethead's raw abilities. The dude has a style unto himself; his solos are so fast, they sound almost like some kind of weird video game music. He's made a lot of solo albums and can play in a million different styles, so this goes well with Axl's continuing musical experimentation.

he actually gets alot of inspiration from videogame music he's heard over the years. And horror movies.

Wow, that is
the
reason for me to be glad that he left the band. What guitarist gets his inspiration from crappy music like that?

Why is a good guitar player important?
Because a band is more than just the lead singer. You need to have equalizing components to balance the band.
Axl has argued that GNR is more than just Axl, that it's the whole band, and in order for that argument to hold water, the band has to be as relevant as Axl... buckethead made that happen for that version of GNR.
I have been a fan of GNR since the days of appetite, and I love Slash, I think he is an amazing player. But, if you were to put Slash up against Buckethead, after witnessing Buckethead perform ... Buckethead is a better player. It brought a different element to the band... perhaps less 'soulful' or emotional, but, nevertheless, the playing was clearly superior.

Axl has argued that GNR is more than just Axl
He has also said that he IS GNR.

the thing is, in a pure technical sense of guitarplaying, Vai, Satriani, EVH...none of them can match Buckethead! another thing is that his weird mind works in a completely different way than those other guys! he's not just a shredder. before I heard Buckethead, I thought a lot of the things he does on the guitar were simply impossible!
and Im not saying this to disrespect those other guys cos Im a fan of them too, especially EVH

of course there is no us and them, but them they do not think the same
